We only have 5 games against the current top 8 left (having played 9 already). That's reassuring. Also I think Southampton have a lot of away games to catch up (many of them in the next month or so). All looking good - but Leeds nearly blew it from a better position, so for us now it's all about concentration and keeping the pack at arms length.

Just for old times sake, we were on 21 points having already lost 12 of our 23 games. And everyone was reaching the half way point at round about New Year - we're a couple of weeks behind because of the weather.

Does look good i agree. We also have to play Daggers twice but so do Udders.

We have tricky away games at MK /Notts County and Brentford. We don't have a very good record at Griffin Park.

We really need to go on another run undefeated i feel.

Norwich had 45 points. Leeds had 56 and almost messed it up, Charlton had 47 and did mess it up.
Can you seriously see us 'messing it up' this season - with the squad and the manager we have, and the way were are playing...?!

Encouraging that out the away games left we are to play bottom 4 away. Surely 12 points...(no jinx intended)

Yep, in fact I wouldn't even make us favourites for the title.
Last time I looked we weren't - William Hill were making Southampton favourites yesterday at 11-8. We were 6-4, which is a bit ridiculous given the fact we are five points ahead of them with a game in hand, and they have loads of away games to come.

As Lord Bracknell says, it would probably take TWO of SCC, Hudds or Bournemouth to put on a real spurt to deny us automatic.

As the Albion have now reached the half way stage in the season, I thought I would put a quick table together looking at how the results achieved compare against the opposition’s league position (as at today’s date).

Students of the "home advantage" will know the supposed significance of distance travelled by the away team.

From 5 away matches in the "North" we have managed to come back with just 2 points (13.3% of those available). From 6 away matches in the "South", however, we have garnered a massive 16 points (88.9%).

After 23 games, Norwich had amassed a total of 45 points (one less than us).

Memory was iffy. It was Leeds a long way ahead. And Millwall a long way behind.

Away games against the middle of the table teams will be a potential slip up in the next two months.

Trips to Bournemouth, MK Dons, Oldham and Brentford are potentially troublesome.

If we win 11
draw 6
lose 6

That would give us 85 points and thats a pretty pessimistic prediction for the second half of the season but probably still enough for an automatic place. Can anyone see those 6 defeats ?

Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club: Fixtures - Telegraph

Fixtures without the two Daggers rearranged matches which we are expected to both win.

Pessimistically, W 12 D 5 L 6 = 87 pts. This season only good enough for third place?

In case anyone cares, here are similar tables for Southampton and Huddersfield respectively. As before, for each side when it comes to their own name, I have added how many games they have played (be it home or away).

I posted these drunken ramblings on another thread the other night but they belong here:

Today was a significant milestone, the 23rd game, half way through the season. We are on 46 points. Do the same again and we would be on 92 points. I thought it might be interesting to look at the top two over the last 5 seasons and the teams they finished just above...

09-10
Norwich 95
Leeds 86
(Millwall 85)

08-09
Leicester 96
Peterborough 89
(MK Dons 87)

07-08
Swansea 92
Notts Forest 82
(Doncaster 80)

06-07
Scunthorpe 91
Bristol City 85
(Blackpool 83)

05-06
Southend 82
Colchester 79
(Brentford 76)

So, do the same again and we win the title three out of five times. Also, if you look at the games that the eventual champions lost, most of the chasing pack would need to go near enough unbeaten in the second half of the season to win the league and I can't see any of them (except for Southampton), having much of a chance of doing that.

Historically speaking, 88 points is enough for second place even in a competitive season and MK Dons lost ELEVEN games when they got 88 points. In 2005 Colchester went up from a mediocre league one with a measley 79 points. We'd only need 33 points (eleven wins) from 23 games to do that.

The year Forest went up i believe Leeds had -15pts deduction otherwise they would have gone up.

On current form...

Using the average home and away points scored, multiplied by the remaining games, the table looks like this.

Of course, that doesn't take into account the easier/harder points scored with the differing opposition.

A 3-way tie for the final playoff spot.

Thing that really strikes me about this table BoF is that to be safe from relegation will take 53 points (predicted) this year. Tough one.
