Well done the board :clap2:

Would the £60,000 have contributed to a new striker?
Probably!

I like the idea of obscuring the sign at away grounds that have the advertising hoardings on show:drink:

There's no way we want that wanker in any way associated with our football club. Top marks to the board for having the guts to turn the money down:clap:

We have a public appeal for 2.5million yet turn down an unbudgeted easy 60k , doesn't matter who it comes from and how many people are going to say why should I dig deep when the club are going to turn down revenue like this ?
What if Archer in a fit of conscience suddenly wanted to give us a no strings 2million ? Would Dick Tight turn that down too ?
It's ok having a moral high ground but when we are crippled with debts it is lunacy to turn down any kind of cash injection

The only way he could concievably redeem himself, would be to undo the damage he did in the first place.

In my book, that means he would have to :

a) Buy back the site of the Goldstone at it's current market value.
b) Fund a planning application to demolish the retail units, Burger Kings, Car Parks etc, & reconstruct a football ground.
c) Pay for the demolition of said retail units etc, and for the construction of the football ground.
d ) F*** Off afterwards, and never come back.

Yes Mr Archer, that's how much I like you !

Take the money for the advertising board and "conveniently" place something in front of it. A skip maybe.

I have just told a couple of Sunderland season ticket holders about this. Their immediate reaction is that the Albion (or Clubs in Crisis) should lobby every Championship club to refuse the Wickes/Focus advertising.
Is anyone doing that?

My initial reaction was that we should have taken the money.

BUT

Businesses will only put this sort of money into advertising if they think it's going to reap rewards that are greater than the sum they put in. The idea of Archer making any more money out of this club makes me feel physically sick, so  to the board.

What's more, it sends a strong signal to idiots like Norman Baker who are still peddling the "you shouldn't have sold the ground in the first place" line.

The problem with that is, perversely, that Wickes would actually get even MORE publicity and attention if we attempted to make this a National issue to encourage clubs to refuse Wickes any advertising space.

You know what they say - there's no such thing as "bad" publicity.

They do say that. But I firmly believe that, in this context, it's not at all true. Even those people who have heard of what He did to us during the Dark Days probably won't realise that they're giving money to that same bloke if they shop at Wickes.

But they would if they started reading "Cash-strapped Seagulls refuse money from despised former chairman" - that would be a great story that would fart noisily in Archer's face every time it's read by his potential customers.

It's worth milking to the max, IMHO.

Perhaps you're right M o H.
If we could get Wickes a notorious reputation amongst football fans across the country it would be pretty embarrassing for them. If it did ever make the news, presumably Wickes would have to make some kind of statement about the issue, which would be interesting...

It's a matter of pride and principal over profit. A very rare quality in the footballing world these days. Hats off to Dick Knight and the board, I cannot believe that some people are criticising him!

Top decision. A lot of chairmen with our sort of financial state on their hands would grab the money, but DK has proved he is actually a fan of the club as well. No fan ever would touch a single penny of dirty scum money.

Just saw this on a Focus Wickes press release:

"ING Barings and Goldman Sachs International are acting as joint financial advisers to certain funds managed by Duke Street Capital and to Bill Archer."

Barings and Archer in the same sentence ... speaks volumes!

Doesn't it just make you sick .....

ENTREPRENEUR Bill Archer is likely to create a 'do-it-yourself ' fortune of around £300m by floating home improvement group Focus Wickes on the stock market. The listing is expected to value the group at around £1.4bn.

Archer, the founder and chairman, holds a 20% stake. Geoff Wilson, the finance director, is also in line for a big windfall*. He is the second-biggest individual investor after Archer.

Duke Street Capital, the biggest shareholder, owns 55% of the company. Its investment is likely to be worth more than £700m.

Archer, a former chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion football club, has earned a reputation as one of the most aggressive players in the industry. He moved into the DIY business 14 years ago with a chain called Choice. His string of takeovers include the Do-It-All chain from Boots, the £289m acquisition of Wickes and the purchase of Great Mills.
