I also have a local connection. My granny lived in Gander Green Lane, so I often watched them when we visited her. I watched them at Wembley in the FA Amateur Cup final in the late 60s, against North Shields I think (or was it Bishop Auckland). They lost after the oppos brought on a new-fangled substitute who ran about and caused havoc.

I queued up with some mates for tickets for the FA Cup match against the Mighty Leeds. The queue stretched right down the road past granny's house, so my aunt brought out a tray of hot drinks for us. Leeds won 6-0.

I would love to see them get into the league.

Are you sure it wasn't the Athenian League or Isthmian League at that time?

One of my uncles played for them I think, before moving up to play for Wimbledon, who were in a higher league, probably the Southern League. That would have been in the 50s I think.

Being born in Sutton, I always have an eye on their results, really glad they're doing well. My Dad took me to watch the FA Cup tie after their Coventry win, it was away to Norwich, think they got thrashed 7-0 if memory serves.. it may have been by more though.

Hat-tricks for Robert Fleck and Malcolm Allen. After Fleck got his treble, the Sutton goalkeeper shook Fleck's hand and congratulated him. What a nice touch. Would that happen these days? I'm not too sure.

Late eighties and early nineties football was great (apart from the Hillsborough disaster). The fanzine culture and vast terraces stood on for the last time before the Taylor Report was one final enjoyment. The following seasons lacked atmosphere at the highest level for quite a while.

Good luck to Sutton United. I've been to Gander Green Lane as a Barnet fan and while they spent a fair bit of money on their ground after playing Arsenal in the FA Cup about five years ago, there'll need another sum of money for security and to boost their capacity. I fancy Torquay will pip them in the end although they'll have an excellent chance in the play-offs. Harry Beautyman is a top striker with a fantastic strike rate.

The decision not to promote any NLS and NLN sides hasn’t been ratified, so the Terras aren’t safe just yet.

In any event, we’re going to stay up on merit, by finishing above Dover, Barnet and Kings Lynn!

My dad played for Cheam park rangers around the same time. He took me to the amateur cup final in 1968/69 against North Shields. Sutton lost 2-1.

Have seen Sutton quite a few times over the years and love to see them do well. Suburban South London is poorly represented by league clubs so would be great to them in the football league.

Naaah Hartlepool have had their turn, it would be good to see a new name grace the Football League.
