Any advice re best place to go re price, customer service etc.

In a similar vein, I need to re-carpet most of my house sometime soon, 4 beds, hallway, stairs etc, plus a couple of bathrooms (not carpet) - is this your sort of thing too ?

Agree with this. Make sure you don't just look at the price per sq yard. We bought a living room carpet which the carpet itself was cheaper elsewhere but the costs for underlay, gripper and fitting were a hell of a lot cheaper. Also their service is really good.

I've alway gone for carpet right. Basically you go down there, choose your carpet and they list it all out what it costs for the carpet, fitting, grippers etc. I've always gone for getting a carpet from one of the rolls rather than ordering it.

I've used carpetright twice and they have been awful both times. If there are no problems fine, but any problems, it's like dealing with muppets. Good luck if you do. Check your invoice carefully. They got it wrong both times with me, abd the hassle was a nightmare
