Advice - Carpets

I've alway gone for carpet right. Basically you go down there, choose your carpet and they list it all out what it costs for the carpet, fitting, grippers etc. I've always gone for getting a carpet from one of the rolls rather than ordering it.

This is something I don't understand. Why would you go down there when they do a free home quote service ?

I have only bought carpet once, but the guy came round, showed me the samples, that I could view in my home, in the place where it was going to be laid, in the right light conditions etc. and see that it was going to match the things around it.

If I go into a shop, I'm going to be looking at colours in a very bright artificial light, with no contect of surroundings - I would have thought all carpet people would do home service, but it looks like only the big boys, CarpetRight or Allied Carpets do that these days.
