Adams: Savage wants to be here

ALBION boss Micky Adams has saluted the desire of loan signing Robbie Savage.

Savage has agreed to drop back down into League One and link up again with Adams after a decade in the Premier League, rather than sit on his £24,000 a week wage packet in the Championship with Derby County.

Adams had to sell Savage to Birmingham for financial reasons six years ago when he was Leicester manager.

The controversial former Wales international midfielder has also played for Blackburn in the top flight since then but now, out of the picture at Derby, he is returning to the third tier of English football where he last played for Crewe in 1997.

Adams said: “The important thing is he wants to come here and put himself back on the map. A lot of people at his level are happy to pick up their money and play in the reserves but Robbie isn’t like that.”

The signing of Savage, first revealed on The Argus website yesterday afternoon, follows the loan capture last week of Coventry’s 22-year-old Irish midfielder Kevin Thornton.

Albion saw off competition for Savage’s services from Port Vale and Wrexham and the 33-year-old will start training with the Seagulls tomorrow in preparation for Saturday’s home game against Cheltenham.

He has not played for Derby since late August so may have to wait for his chance but, when it comes, Adams expects supporters to embrace Savage’s enthusiasm.

Adams said: “I don’t think you can ever have enough good players in the squad and a bit of experience as well. We took a young lad in Kevin Thornton last week and have supplemented the midfield with an older pro and somebody who has played at a higher level.

“The main thing is his enthusiasm. Our fans will look forward to seeing him in an Albion shirt and he will be the focus of taunts from the opposition. That is how it is with Robbie – you either love him or hate him.”

Derby are paying a large chunk of Savage’s salary to make the move to the South Coast affordable for Albion. His loan stint runs until November 1 – three days before the Seagulls host Derby in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Meanwhile, midfielder Wes Fogen is joining Dorchester on a free transfer.

Adams said: “Wes came to see me this week and said he wanted regular first team football and that Dorchester were offering him just that.

“We wish him well because he is a first class professional.”

While I'm pleased that Savage is here I'm at a loss how a month's loan will improve our chances in the league as we couldn't afford to have hom down here long term if we had to pay all his wages. He WILL bring the punters in, it gets us noticed and maybe for a month our form will pick up. But after a month.... not sure what it gives us.... it may upset the team when he goes back. So, on the team front its purely a plaster, nothing mre.

I disagree, if he can effect our form in a poistive way, momentum is a big thing and the results could continue after he goes.

Signing a quality player for albeit only a month can never be a bad thing

I'm not saying its a bad thing... for the club as a whole....yet momentum can work both ways.... I think it s a big risk.

He may well set us on the road to gaining promotion by helping us get a few wins bearing in mind that October is a very busy month. His enthusiasm may then make our existing players believe in their own ability and be able to progress if he returns to Derby. On the other hand he may enjoy his time here and ask to extend his loan for a little longer. He must be a fairly wealthy man so perhaps his deire for playing is greater than his need for big wages, who knows, we can only wait, and hope and see what happens.

I think most of West Ham may disagree with you there, a billy big bollox rocking up in his Lambo could seriously put some noses out of joint !!!!

Right here, right now
He is still getting paid the same money to play here as if he were playing at Derby - the difference is here he will be getting regular first team football in a Division where he should look quality.

All reasonable points BG but, considering your background, do you have any particular views on why we've signed him? My initial thought was why do we need another defensive midfield player, particularly as we seem to by-passing the midfield anyway?
Don't know if you went to Northampton but after all the euphoria of the Man City game, I thought we were pretty rubbish tactically, much like the park football that's been served up at Withdean during the four league games.
Maybe a knee-jerk/panic reaction from the manager?

dont think savage is defensive. Great at free kicks, can unlock a defence and can score some cracking goals. People always underestimated the fact Savage can actually play a bit. You don't get to acheive all he has without being abole to put your foot on the ball and play. Let's face it, with our midfield we are heading for a lower half finish this season. If it is a knee jerk.....then that could be exactly what we require.

OK I hope you're right.

I agree but the midfield is by-passed during most games - certainly has been in the league games at Withdean and during the majority of last Saturday at Sixfields. Surely this is a planned tactic and not something the players decide on the pitch?

Its good in the sense that it shows we have ambition but complety agree, he's only here for a month and don't think thats long enough for him to have a significant impact, also I heard we're paying half his salary? If this is correct we're paying him 12K a week!

I'd rather see that money spend elsewhere

I don't think our midfield has been bypassed at all I just think they have been shit and hence not very effective. Savage & Thornton might change all that and allow our wide players to get into good positions for better deliveries to our forwards rather than having to take the ball from the halfway line and then look for options.

We're paying much less than that, can't remember exactly how much; about £1500 maybe?

Good people, enough moaning maybe? I can't wait to see him; he's going to be QUALLA and very entertaining.

I'd like to see him driving his Lambo onto the PITCH and emerging from it wearing sunglasses and a spangly suit, all to the strains of Carmina Burana while his team-mates prostrate themselves at his feet. I think he's going to be great fun.

Who remembers when Jimmy Case came back for a second time - around '95? He was about 38 but just ran the midfield from the halfway line - getting the ball from defence and giving it to the forwards. If Savage can do something similar, but at a higher tempo, with Anyinsah, Thornton, Murray and Forster to receive it we'll be fine.

Might even bring some of the missing fans back.

Well it couldn't be a better month and value for money.

We have 7 league games incuding games against Leicester, Leeds, Peterborough and Millwall.

I think 7 league games is enough to make an impact.

 Top idea! Even better would be all the fans turning up with blonde mullet wigs and blinged up to the eyeballs as Savage clones. Who needs all this tame Doug Loft fan worship when we have a real anti-hero to idolise.
