All reasonable points BG but, considering your background, do you have any particular views on why we've signed him? My initial thought was why do we need another defensive midfield player, particularly as we seem to by-passing the midfield anyway?
Don't know if you went to Northampton but after all the euphoria of the Man City game, I thought we were pretty rubbish tactically, much like the park football that's been served up at Withdean during the four league games.
Maybe a knee-jerk/panic reaction from the manager?

I think that we are desperate for a midfielder who can do for us now what Chippy and Dodge did in Micky's last spell perhaps he can do that and in adding his experience, whether it be in a defensive role, which I doubt very much, or in a more forward role he may provide the balls for Murray and Forster to run onto in their stride rather than hit and hope over the top balls that have been a prevelant feature of our play for most of the season. His arrival may alo convince MA to play Virgo in his best position as a defender.

My belief is that, and I have said it many times, that Virgo will finish up playing right back and that the midfield options that we now have will make this easier.

I think so too. In my opinion Whing hasn't been very good this season (he was good for about 20minutes in the second half at Northampton game) he also doesn't look fully fit so I would drop him, play Virgo there and as you said, this would make midfield position choices easier.

Jesus, everybody has been crying out for us to get a decent midfielder in the middle of the park so that players can play in the right positions.

Now we have that - guess what - people are questioning how much we are paying!!!! It's incredible...

Get over it - we have a quality midfielder who tries his heart out, and gives the energy in midfield we have clearly been missing. Whether he can make an impact, well that's another question, but this is the quality central midfielder we've been missing, so for crying out loud, be pleased!!

I personally do not care how much of his wages we are paying so long as he does the job that is expected of him. If DK and Co decided to pay all of his reputed 26k per week it doesnt affect me in any way or what I will think about his contribution on the field. In my estimation he will either do the job or not and that is how I shall judge him.

Cheers BG, couldn't agree more about Virgo being best played in defence. Have read your previous posts about teams seeking to exploit a perceived defensive weakness on our rhs and I see what you've been on about - something about Whing's positioning and the midfield cover isn't quite right.
In attack, whoever is playing on our right wing almost always ends up having to come back for the ball and turn instead of it being played through to them.

I think you're missing the point. For the club its a good decision and I must admit after reading what others have said I am less concerned than before. I have high hopes for the next month and I agree with Thornton and Savage in the middle I think we could have a very good month!!!! It's the 'and then what....?' that worries me. Time will tell but MA won't get us promotion with plasters... we need a pemanent answer in the middle. Only time will tell whether Savage and Thornton stay becuase if we plan our game around them, we better have replacements for them or the tactic won't work.

Still.... roll on the next fabulous month! :)

Correct again BensGrandad

I do believe myself and you were the only people originally saying Whing should be dropped and Virgo should be at right back, we'll see what happens, eh? :smokin:
