No issues with Lallana only playing the odd game, but him only able of playing one half of football was not the bill of goods sold to me. If that’s always going to be the case I’d sooner put faith in one of our talented youngsters.

As much as a great guy he probably is, as a signing the jury’s out for me.

If it means Mac Allister starts tomorrow, it might be a blessing in disguise this time round.

He is a quality player who was brought in to help the squad and bring on the youngsters.

I don't think anyone in the club expected to get 30 matches out of him this season.
Hopefully he will be fit and fully available for the season run in, where his quality could well be the difference between staying up and the unthinkable.

Would be preferable if he could complete a game Or at least be available for the next one
If you knew he could only play every other game You can plan around that But off at H/ T ?
Frustrating for him and us And epitomises our season

Bloke has hardly played any football last season. 22 appearances 870 minutes.
The idea that he should be a frequent starter at the beginning of this one is hopeful at best.

I'm sure the plan was always to get him to that position as quickly as possible.
But the reality was always this would be more likely towards the end of the season.

I would rather he was fully available for the run in than being overplayed now.
I trust the club to manage his transition to full fitness.

In our 18 PL matches so far he has:

  • Played the full 90 three times
  • Played 86 minutes once
  • Played 60+ in three more
  • Played 45 in 3
  • Been a late sub-in in 3
  • Had his 8 minute cameo against Liverpool
  • Missed 4 matches through injury

Overall he's played 770 minutes, or about 43 per game.

It's fairly mixed, but not exactly outside of expectations - we knew we weren't getting someone to play every minute of every match, and that's why we got him on a free transfer.

I really hope they do get him fit
Going off at a tangent, I hope the rest of the squad have bought into his part time participation
It’s pretty galling as a player to get overlooked for another who can’t last the match
Unless his abilities are that far above their own They see the benefits to the team
Let’s not forget to get to this level , the players will have a pretty high opinion of their own abilities
Has this caused any simmering resentment behind the scenes ?
Now I fully understand the clubs thinking behind the AL transfer ,and the time to review it is the seasons end
Let’s hope it works out positively and AL is instrumental in us staying up

He was never really what the squad needed. Another central player and a blocker to players like Mac Allister and Molumby. He adds genuine top level experience and I'd imagine his true value is off the pitch - certainly at the moment! He has looked good when he's been able to play, without really having too much of an impact. It was a strange signing for me, because he was never what we actually needed. Especially on a 3 year contract.

From what I've seen Lalanna is easily our best player. From what I've read he is also a model pro with absolutely no ego, so I doubt there would be any resentment from his teammates.

Indeed I understand that s why we got to sign him
my musings might be clouded by the 3 x off at Half time at least one of which I’m sure was pivotal in a defeat
Not his fault mind
As I said if you knew he could only play every other game You could plan around it and also replace him after 60/70 minutes if needed to nurture that rehabilitation process
It’s the nature of his UC along with his injury’s that make it unpredictable and ergo frustrating
Out of interest how many of those performances have been in the deeper CM role alongside Biss or another
Tbf I was expecting him to play more of an advanced role when he signed
Perhaps playing further forward would help ? Less defensive responsibilities involved ,more of a free role
Or is he playing within himself in that deeper role to protect himself ?

Technically at this level , and experience wise without a doubt
Hopefully that is the case

Technically and game intelligence, he just raises the tempo of our play. This is what we miss most without him.

Problem for me is that when he plays he becomes central to everything we do. the position he plays tells you that.

So when he goes off injured, it changes the fulcrum of the team. When fit he's one of our most influential players but in our team, he needs to play more regularly otherwise it disrupts the way the team plays. You can't keep picking him on the off chance he may last the whole game - and going off injured in the first half or at half time happens too regularly.

Its a bit like Vicente. Amazing player but he never really had any huge influence on a season because he was always injured. When he did play you could see other Albion players constantly looking around to see where he was which wasn't the way we could play when wasn't in the team (most of the time).

Not a fan I'm afraid. I'd be happier putting a hungry young guy in there who could last the whole game.
