Friend of mine stopped at a crossing on Brighton seafront to let a Mum and her baby in pushchair cross. Another car just went past him and ploughed into the Mum - killed them both. My friend still having counselling for the shock. Will never be the same again.

The are only victims in this kind of thing.

I can remember that VERY VERY SAD

That is part of the reason i won't stop to let people cross is because of the stupid impatient idiots that will drive like a cvnt through heavy traffic to save themselves a whole 2 minutes or so on their journey home :nono:

This from the man who BOASTED that he can drive from Brighton to Nottingham in about an hour and a half.

At least be consistent when you're talking about excessive speed

You what? ? ?

The amount of times i used to stop to let a pedestrian cross the road and some idiot would come tearing past me not realising what i was doing as they were too much in a rush.

The only semi safe place to cross the a259 in Brighton is at a proper crossing but a lot of people ignore it and i have seen 3 similar accidents in the last two months.

Car in inside lane slows to let people cross and car in outside lane or car behind overtakes at 30+mph and nearly misses or hits people crossing the road

And if you look back at that thread you will see that i never speed in 30 or 40mph limits as it's not safe too.

Motorways are the only roads i tend to speed on as they were designed for that type of speed

But it was at a crossing, where you should stop - and not use the behaviour of others as an excuse for your own lack of consideration.

General question - Who is responsible for setting or varying the speed limits on urban roads? Is it the Local Authority, County Council, Highways Agency or the Police?
Basically ... speed limits on urban roads are decided by parliament. The limit is 30 mph.

Variations from this can be approved by the highway authority, which - in the case of Chalky Road, Mile Oak - is Brighton & Hove City Council. But any variation (upwards or downwards) has to be justified by the road meeting certain technical criteria. 20 mph speed limits are basically required to be self-enforcing (ie accompanied by physical traffic calming measures that effectively reduce the speed of most traffic to something close to 20 mph). The police (and the public) have the right to comment on any proposals made by the highway authority, but it is the council that makes the final decision. The decision is enshrined in a Road Traffic Regulation Order that can be challenged in the courts if the highway authority has failed to comply with the legal procedures that must be followed before the Traffic Regulation Order was made.

In other words, it takes a long time to change a speed limit. And the wishes of local people cannot over-ride the legal obligation to complete the lengthy (and costly) legal procedures.

The government was apparently considering asking parliament to simplify the process of introducing 20mph limits in certain locations (eg in the vicinity of schools). But I'm not sure if that has happened yet.

What 'type of speed'?

80mph?

90, 100?

All fast enough to kill someone

I hope he's ok

He definitely ran out from behind the bus - from what i have heard he was late for something at the leisure centre

So is 15 mph if you get hit by a lorry

Does that mean all built up areas should be 10mph??

Varies due to all the normal factors but 100+ is safe in the right conditions

If you are trained correctly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. all uk motorways are tested for use up to 120mph

Way out west
Where I used to live there was a blanket 20mph limit as it was a residential area, however this didn't stop people driving through at speeds way in excess, at least it gave the Police authority to pretty much throw the book at anyone they caught...plus those who did obey the limit made it a far safer place to live, at 20mph you should have plenty of time to read the road ahead and spot most potential hazards.

Not sure of the figures, but I reckon someone hit at 20mph stands a greater chance of escaping death than someone hit at 30mph, thus I feel the lower speed should be enforced in residential areas...period!

Bulldog - that's exactly what I thoght had happened - happens all too often down there -and now someone's got hurt, it's no great surprise. Obviously not a nice thing to happen, and I hope that the kid pulls through, but it was just a matter of time beofre someone got really hurt.
