Accept that losing to Germany wasn't the disgrace it has been made out to be?

Well done Germany. Maybe some people will accept that losing to Germany is not quite the disgrace they seemed to think. We were not very good the whole tournament, can't hide that, but Germany are a really really good side and we came back from 2-0 to effectively be 2-2, something Argentina haven't managed or even come close to.

In a pile of football shirts
I think the disgrace was down to the way the players conducted themselve on the pitch. They all play for some of the very best club sides in the World, alongside the Worlds greatest players, yet look like they dont give a toss when on the pitch in an England shirt.

I agree that once we had the goal disallowed and for the first 35 mins we were bad but we WERE better than Argentina today. Argentina havent scored once and how many proper saves has neuer made compared to last week?

Argentina should get absolutely murdered by their press tomorrow and Maradona has to be sacked.... this is a technically better team than England after all.

No, we where shocking. We would have been beaten by Ghana as well. Fact.

i did not say we would have beaten ghana, i merely commented that i would prefer to lose to a top 10 country as opposed to ghana

what i really don't get is how between rooney ronaldo and messi they managed a single goal :lolol:

I think we are over harsh on ourselves, because we think highly paid players should play better.

Take a look at the way Argentina are capitulating. Only difference to the England display is that they werent a short sighted linesman away from 2-2.

I just think people need a reality check. We're not the best for sure, but we're not the worst. The truth is there are no easy games in world football anymore and Italy, France and Portugal all went out before or at the same round as ours. No shame in that. Would love to see us do better but realistically should we really be better than somewhere between 9th-16th in the world for a country of our size?

Wondered how long it would be before this thread popped up.

Losing to Germany was never the disgrace; the way we played/defended and the system, team selection and substitutions were.

Germany were good, but we made them look good, much like the Argies have done today.

Classic. I came onto NSC knowing that this thread would be here.

Good news everyone! We're actually REALLY good. We should have at least got to the semis!

The problem is it is quite a thin line between a disgrace and an average perfromance. I think we out up a better than Argentina have. At 2-1 we were in the game, and should have been level at half time. Argentina have neve been in the game.

So we lost 4-1, but how many games have you seen end like that where a team is chasing. I think people have been overly harsh and should take a long hard look at the whole world of football and accept it has changed instead of handpicking small parts of our game and suggesting we should be world beaters.

agreed that Germany are a really good side, but you can't hide the fact that England were just truly shocking . I just hope the FA's decision to keep Capello doesn't back fire. In Euro '88 we lost all three games and Sir Bobby Robson kept his job , he then took us to the semi's in the next major tournament

Maradona must hate Germany even more than us!

They've now ruined his world cup dream twice! Poor guy...

Yes because that is what I said!!!:wanker:

I'm not saying we were good, just don't think we were quite so bad.

Everyone goes on about 1990, but we were truly shocking in the group games, Belgium, and cameroon and scraped through only to lose to an average German team.

Why do we have to always go to one extreme or another. In 1990 we were probably a 7/10 team and people talk like we were world beaters. This time we were maybe a 5 or 6/10 team and suddenly we are the worse England team in history. It's just crap frankly. The margins are very very tiny.

500g/1lb 2oz shallots, peeled
3 tbsp black peppercorns
flaked sea salt
1kg/2¼lb fillet of beef
olive oil
small bunch of thyme leaves
1 tbsp demerara sugar
roast potatoes and buttered spinach, to serve
For the sauce:
4 tbsp brandy
250ml/8fl oz beef stock
150ml/5fl oz double cream
Worcestershire sauce

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6
2. Place the shallots in a pan of boiling water and blanch for a couple of minutes. Drain and put to one side.
3. Coarsely crush the peppercorns in a pestle and mortar or mini-blender. Put on a plate with 1 tbsp salt and roll the beef fillet over the mixture, pressing firmly so it sticks to the flesh.
4. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a roasting tray and when its very hot, quickly fry the fillet until it's browned all over. Remove from the heat and scatter the blanched shallots and thyme around the fillet. Sprinkle the shallots with the sugar and a little oil. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes for rare beef, 40 minutes for medium, or 50 minutes for well-done. Halfway through the cooking time, turn the shallots in the tray. Once they are cooked, remove the beef and shallots from the tray, taking out any thyme stalks, and keep warm to rest.
5. For the sauce, place roasting tin over a high heat, add the brandy and set alight. When the flames have died down, stir in the beef stock and boil for 3 minutes. Stir in the cream and a dash of Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for a couple of minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly. It is now ready to serve with the rested fillet of beef, sweet roasted shallots, and perhaps some roast potatoes and buttered spinach.

The disgrace was not losing to Germany,it was playing four games, scoring three goals, and there not being one good performance amongst them.
