That was in 63, but the song came from Carousel which had been around since 1945. The film was in 1956.

Singing during football matches is generally thought to have started in the sixties. Here's an article by the great Steven Wells with comments from Rogan Taylor, who, unsurprisingly, says that the scousers started it.

Here's the Panorama report mentioned for those who haven't seen it before:

Whether Jane is remembering correctly or not is difficult to establish with no contemporary reports of her claims. If it had happened as she tells it, I am sure that there would be hundreds of Old Trafford veterans ready to corroborate her claims. The claims from Manchester, being made decades after the event, and with little back up, surely have to be treated as unsubstantiated claims.

If it was done at any point in the past twenty years (probably more but this is as far as my awareness extends) you just wouldn't do it. Even if there is some claim from Manchester that 'they started it' - if you are getting a tattoo to argue for such a lost cause you are a ****ing idiot. It is forever associated with Liverpool Utd FC Champs and no-one is going to first think 'oh goodness there must be a rival claim to that song Liverpool fans have splooged over for what feels like forever', they're going to think you're a fool or more likely a medically certified brain-retard.

Please note - stupid name for Liverpool based on the monumental arrogance I unfailingly encounter in their fans. Particularly those who were indoctrinated aged 4 at the very final wheezes of their dominant era. Honestly they are such unfailing bores and pricks - all football discussion is tinged by undeserved arrogance in my experience. Still - it has meant no end of ways to somehow work Gerrard's slip into conversation for example:

'i've not seen a funnier turn since a scouse ankle', that kind of thing. Trips and falls being the bread and butter.

I'm not sure why I'm so angry today. I think I need to get laid.

No argument who sang it first in England ,but United fans will no doubt claim they ever sang it at all. Hope the bus strike didn't give you any problems today.

Thanks!

Actually the roads were clearer for me on my route to work. But there were some nasty queues around some areas.
