I'm trying to remember a bloke who was to all intents and purposes Australian, but who was picked by England during their particularly crap phase in the 1990s, and whom the Aussie cricketers nicknamed "the rat who joined the sinking ship"?

Martin McGauge, played for Kent on an Irish passport! (Was described as thus)

Another candidate from the era was Craig White!

Martin John McCague (born 24 May 1969, Larne, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Ireland born cricketer who played for England in 3 Tests from 1993 to 1994.

His development as a cricketer started in Australia, where he grew up. He played first-class cricket for Kent, who due to his Northern Ireland origins were allowed to field both him and an overseas player. His selection for England drew negative comments from some cricket commentators including John Woodcock in view of the fact that he had started his career in Australia. He bowled well on debut, taking 4 for 121 in the first innings of the 1993 Trent Bridge Test. He had considerable pace but lacked control. With his experience of first class cricket in Australia, his selection for that winter's Ashes tour was not as surprising as is sometimes suggested.

The last two had families who fled here from civil war...and have especially in the case of Lol Deng are as passionate and patriotic as any person representing their country.

Andrew Strauss? Born in SA, still has a trace of the accent, but both parents are British and he's spent most of his life here. Or you could have been thinking of Tony Greig.

Lennox Lewis was born in London but moved to Canada, and represented Canada in the Olympics.
