Govia Thameslink Railway, which operates the Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express brands - Govia also runs Southeastern trains under a separate franchise.

More an indictment of the two staff members in my opinion. They would hardly get any grief from other passengers for allowing a pregnant woman to sit down.

In the case of GTR they should be forced to rebrand seating as Third and Second Class seeing as how there's nothing remotely first class about that wretched company.

Actually that is not true. I commute from Haywards Heath to the City on Thameslink, and it is always virtually full. I always assumed that it had people without first class tickets in it, but yesterday an inspector came round and everyone was legit.

If the lady wants to sit in First Class she should have bought a First Class ticket. If the staff permitted her to sit in First with a Standard Class ticket, then what's to stop every other passenger following her? Can't discriminate, don't you know?

Or if she was on a Thameslink train, she could have sat in the First Class area of the end carriage (i.e. the one furthest from the driver), as this is permanently declassified.

There was the ability for the onboard guard to declassify first class due to the overcrowding, obviously now revenue is far more important than being sensible.

I am not surprised at all by the actions of Govia.

There was no one - and I mean no one - in First Class. That means at least twenty empty seats. The lady was made to push past all of us in the standing space by the doors and those standing in the aisles and then hope someone gave up her seat.

This made even more ridiculous by the fact none of us were even allowed to stand in the First Class area (they could easily have allowed that) thus cramping us up even more.

Disgusting - and for those who say she should have bought a First Class ticket - you obviously don't commute.

Personally I think it’s an indictment of the general public who no longer take the initiative to offer up their seat to someone who obviously needs one more than they do. I see this every match day on the P&R buses

Despite the obvious fishing, quite a few train companies do allow pregnant women to use first class seats.

Behave, nothing fishy at all except your interpretation. There’s no obligation and it’s great some operators do.

It starts and ends with your choice though doesn’t it? Whatever the circumstances, you ultimately choose not to pay first class. Choose to commute. Choose to catch a particular train. Just as you choose to manipulate others interpretation with ‘made to’ and ‘forced to’ as if this lady had to run some tough mudder gauntlet. Get a sense of proportion please. She boarded a train. She didn’t have a first class ticket, choose not to pay for one - same as you - and Govia just happened to be enforcing carriage conditions that day. Maybe the assumption you all freely could is the actual issue here. Meanwhile some other member of the public had the decency to give up their seat. No big deal. Do it and see it all the time. And that is all there’s to it. Regardless of your persistent attempts to emotionally inflame what is an everyday occurrence up and down the country. I’ve deliberately left out the issue of packed trains because this isn’t news. In fact this entire thread is a complete non story and typical of today’s outrage at everything hyperbole. No offence, like.
