I don't think we should have a minute silence for the Pope as he is not the head of state for the church of England, if people want to pay their respects. Do so privately at church or whatever.

you had to bring ENGLAND into it didn't you you big Jake loving nancy boy:)

Compared to the hysteria we had for the death of an ex-royal, when all the fixtures were cancelled out of 'respect' so that the tabloids could have an extra self pity day, a minute for JPII is not a lot to ask.

I personally (as a Catholic) did not think it was necessary, but you will be delighted that some tax dodging students last night amongst the Albion faithful were too busy discussing the latest copy of Viz, or whether The Bravery were better than The Killers, to participate in the silence.

Those of you who are saying you won't observe a silence if it is held on Saturday - what exactly are you hoping to achieve?

All you will do is embarrass the club and disrespect those of your fellow Brighton fans to whom this might be important. You're hardly likely to upset the pope. Just sounds very immature to me.

Immature? So maturity is displaying fake 'respect' - in a football ground, FFS? - for someone whose 'divine guidance' has increased suffering for untold millions of people across the third world? Anti-women, anti-contraception, anti-gay (which of course does have especial relevance in our city)

As for dissenters being hardly likely to upset the Pope, I don't suppose all those embarrassed Withdean worshippers will make much impression on him either. That's because he's dead, remember?

No, maturity is standing by your principles and deciding not to participate in this orchestrated charade, by getting up, walking away and visibly doing something other than 'respect' such a person. That's what I'll be doing - and so will a lot of others too.

Sorry, but that is pure ignorance and it sounds like the beginnings of bigotry. When you grow up, you will realise that there are times when you have to do something and other times when you just have to shut up and respect the wishes of others.

BTW, you may have failed to notice that many of the 3-4 million who have felt the need to pay their respects in person were women and the Pope had many supporters in the Third World.

My point was your actions would embarrass the club and disrespect your fellow Albion fans to whom this might be important. I notice you completely missed it.

As it happens, I would agree that there shouldn't be a silence on Saturday. But if there is one, then you should respect the wishes of the club and the Catholics present instead of trying to make some ill-informed ideological point.

That's most odd. You are so keen to stand up for your principles but you are ripping the Pope for sticking to his. Isn't that a little hypocritical?

Disagree with you mate.

I'm an athiest. Why should I pay my respects to someone who I have a low regard for in a lot of what he advised people to do. There is nowhere in the bible that refers to contraception. It is made up by the Catholic church. His views (which is all they are, not a divine message), have been responsible for the deaths of many millions of people in the developing world due to the teachings of the Catholic church on contraception.

Perhaps during this minutes silence, all Catholics can take their pious head out of their arse and realise that. Maybe they should take the time to reflect on the lives of the millions that he has benn partially responsible for condeming to death.

Religion sucks.

Very well put. Lets put this into perspective, Brighton & Hove Albion are playing a crucial football match against Leicester City FC at a temporary football stadium in front of 6000 football fans. Why should those people be made to participate in mourning the passing of the head of the Catholic church? It is complete nonsense and it is right people stand up and say so instead of acting like sheep.

My phone went off during the Pope's silence at Preston.

I hope he didn't mind.

If there's a minutes silence on Saturday, I think I'll register my feelings at the pointlessness of it all by sitting down and reading the programme.

Anyway, its not so much the one minute silence before the game thats the problem, its the 90 minutes silence that takes place DURING the game we should worry about.

The Pope had absolutely nothing at all to do with football. He did, however, have a lot to do with opposing women's interests, increasing the third world's starving population and the spread of Aids.

People can - and should - pay their respects to this person privately, without being manipulated by UEFA into some sheep-like public display of fake grief at a football ground, of all places.

They've just had one at Preston. If it happens at Withdean on Saturday, I shall simply not participate.

Anyone else for a boycott?

Count me in, i'm all for Cliffe Bonfire Society. :lolol:

And in doing so dis-respect the wishes and principles of non-Catholics? Isnt a minutes silence at a football game in a Protestant/secular country for the Pope a rather silly ideological gesture.

Worse of all, these constant silences devalue the purpose of the gesture and need to stop.

Got it in one Easy. I do not especially want to partake in a minutes silence for the Pope, purely because I am not catholic, and he didn't mean much to me. However, by sitting it out but staying quiet, shows your feelings, but also shows enough respect for those that do want to pay their respects.

Whilst I agree a football match is neither the time nor the place for a silence for the pope, if anyone starts singing or shouting during the silence, they are not showing their feelings that a silence should not be held, but showing pure and utter contempt for those that do. Respect other peoples feelings.

I don't know anyone who is in favour of a minutes silence at the Withdean Stadium on Saturday.

It is ludicrous. I am C of E, the Pope to me is the Anti-Christ, why bring religion into football?

You could all hold up your copies of the Da Vinci Code in protest.

I'd trade a minutes silence for the weeks worth of coverage on the media over here and on top of that some shops will be shut tomorrow and the boys have been given a day off school. Worse still, THE GOLF CLUB IS SHUT .

I understand that there will NOT now be a minute's silence for the Pope at Withdean on Saturday. Well done to everybody who registered their dissent.

Instead, let's now have 90 minutes of noise - for what really matters to our poor, lost souls.
