It is just one of many reasons for conflict. We've had two world wars in which millions of people died. Neither of those was caused by religion.

You are right about Cameron though.

I would argue that 6 million murdered Jews is a religous issue.

Greed and Politics are.

Hello Tyrone. A good point. Greed and politics are a big issue too. It is my belief that religion usurps all others when it comes to conflict.

We are not so very far apart as you might imagine. The C of E schools are relatively benign and I would generally agree with you in that they probably cause little harm. However, there are both Islamic and Christian schools teaching a literal approach to their scriptures and this leads to pupils being taught science that is plain wrong. I would contend that at the very least that is harmful to a child's development.

Also, on the point you make about the two world wars being unrelated to religion, I could point out that Hitler, oft said to be an atheist, made a great play of his faith for his own ends (Gott Mit Uns). However, I absolutely do agree with you that religion is simply one of several things that mankind can be made to fight over: territory, resources and politics to name but a few.

You see? We can agree about some stuff.

No, were not very far apart.

Unfortunately the more this government pursues policies such as free schools, the more you will get extremist schools popping up. But then I'm not sure state controlled schools are entirely a good thing, or those heavily subsided by corporations. C of E is probably a good compromise.

No real conclusions can be drawn about Hitler either way. It can be plausibly claimed from things he said that he was both a theist and an atheist.

I'd argue that it was mainly a racial issue. I'd also argue that atheists killed many, many millions more in the name of socialism in the 20th century alone than the warped minds of religious zealots managed. I'm not sure where all those deaths fit into your 'cornerstone' theory.

Prayers twice a day, grace before lunch.

He thinks there is a God for a fact.

There's been no teaching of humanism or atheism.

Presumably you practice atheism at home meaning that you don't celebrate Easter or Christmas. No presents, no Easter eggs or do you pick and choose some aspects to follow? I'm aware that Easter and Christmas are pagan festivals adopted by Christians but you're no more a pagan than a Christian.

To think of Christmas as a Christian festival is so ridiculous.

My best mate is a Muslim and his family "celebrate" Christmas.

It's a time for families to get together and have a good time.

You said religion caused conflict and then raised the holocaust as evidence.. but all that shows is people of a certain race/ creed being murdered by a non- religious regime. It's bizarre that you thought that example supported your assertion.

From things I have seen around the world. Too many religious issues divide countries globally imo. My original point mentioned social conflict. People don't have to die for it to be a social religious conflict.

Christmas IS a Christian festival. The name gives that away, don't you think?

Things were so much more straightforward when mankind simply worshipped the sun.

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."

Quote from Hitler. Religious or racial? Make your own mind up.

Do you think religion caused that, or was Hitler just a nutter? Make your own mind up.
