I may be in the minority, I usually am, but I dont think that Sam should have resigned after being set up by a newspaper trying to recover its failing readership. He was just hung out to dry in search of sales of the paper. They gave got one big scalp and all else will just fade into the dark.

Of course he had to go. Allardyce knows that outside of his role as England manager he has to be seen as the model of propriety and not bring the FA or football generally into disrepute. He's clearly done that and there's no ifs or buts about it.

And just how could the FA go to EUFA or FIFA and speak out against corruption in the game with the whiff of this still hanging over them? Let's not get hung up on semantics or argue the technicalities of whether he broke the rules or merely bent them - it was unethical and against the spirit of the game and I think that's possibly more important than anything here.

We live in a society that seems to applaud people that "get away with things", if everyone paid their dues and contributed to society in a positive way it would be better for all. Unfortunately life's not like that and there are too many that are happy to overlook their their own morals and responsibilities for personal gain.

I do not know enough about him to form an opinion but Sam was all over the papers. I do not think that Sam did anything illegal, perhaps not morally correct, but solicitors do this all day long and getting an obviously guilty man off on a technicality is no different and they are held up as the pillars of society. What is the difference just because it is football?

He wouldn't have had to resign (though I thought he was given the boot) if he'd used his brain first and just said he couldn't/wouldn't help people 'get round' the rules.

We're not talking about someone who might be unsure of himself here, he's been in the game long enough to know what's expected of the national manager and if he fell for it (by which I mean 'dicussed terms to help them with seemingly very little prompting') then it's his own bloody fault.

Was it sly by the paper or investigative journalism? That can be argued endlessly if people so choose but the fact remains that there wouldn't even be a story if Allardyce hadn't played along.

Same here. I don't have any issue with the journalistic aspect whatsoever, they set it up and decided to leap gleefully into their money-laden embrace.

My nod to the other side of thinking is to acknowledge that there will be people who see that the paper is the one in the wrong here, or were somehow unethical. That's their decision/viewpoint, certainly not mine.

Er.. it's a not a law. It's a regulation if you want to part of UEFA or the FA.

In actual fact the regulation has been deemed "legal". Not the other way round.

Problem here of course - the rule was set by his employer in the first place... Whilst you may see no problem his bosses did. Bye Bye Sam.

That isn't Sam Alladyce's job to test rules. He was the manager of England. Not a football agent or a solicitor..
