Never understood why it was downsized, I always thought u could have 6 subs and it was ok? I'd there a fine involved if you can't fill ur bench up?

And I think it's great news for the likes of JFC and that Norwegian fella

It was 7, then went to 5 after a number of clubs voted to downsize to start last season. Now been voted back the other way.

Mate of mine says he just saw Adgestein and JFC in Asda buying party hats, crisps and pop. They were talking about celebrating some good news.

Being a bit of a purist (call me old-fashioned if you like) I'm not sure I like the idea. 11 on the field and 7 on the bench is getting to be a bit like American Football. What next, rolling subs and a sin-bin?

I understand how it might help certain players get a taste of first-team football (JFC and Adgerstein for example), but there's something I just don't agree with.

Where will it end? 5 subs seemed like a lot. Now 7. Why leave it there? Why not 11 subs?

if only we had a young central midfielder.......maybe the son of an ex-pro, or maybe even a step-son of a former albion player.....and maybe, I don't know, a young Norwegian striker

i reckon they would really benefit from this

Joking aside, it will give managers options.

In the face of the modern squad game it was pissing in the wind for clubs like Exeter to try to reduce costs - 5 subs means less pros at the club and less travel costs etc etc...............
Unfortunately in the Championship clubs will risk everything to make the next step up and the riches this can bring and that means maximum squad sizes and maximum options. Similarly in League 1, clubs like the Sheffields and Charlton and Huddersfield reach a point where it is shit or (literally) bust (as Pompey will I believe prove again next year) - get promotion or disappear because they are too top heavy to survive at the lower levels.

Toby and Jake aside, this could make a big difference when someone like Grant Hall is considering whether to stay - he can now expect to get in our matchday squad with the chance to prove himself within the two years of a contract. He will no way get that chance at Spurs where he will be too far back in the queue to have a chance of making an impact in the short term.
