Anyone only missing Athens away must be really hurting now.
Not only missing out on our first ever tear gassing but a goodie bag as well.

Gutted.

Personally, the home grown sparkling wine is pretty damn good. There are some very decent vineyards and all producing top notch fizz. Rather pricey but having had Champagne recently I would say champagne is not as good and the French know it. That said, I have yet to enjoy a Red produced in this country. Will continue to stick to other continents.
I guess it depends which champagne....there's a hell of a lot out there.

Just for the record I do enjoy NyeTimber and have a few bottles at home courtesy of my fizz mule @Uncle Buck

Most cheap Prosecco is artificially gasified while I think all cava has a second fermentation in the bottle like champagne does. There is some high end cava that is easily as good as Champagne.
The thread derailment here is of johnsonian proportions. Sorry, must rush - I have another meeting.

Nyetimber is delicious stuff: served at Glyndebourne and Buckingham Palace I believe (I’ve only experienced the former. To date.). It’s a fine, classy choice.

I did a tour of Denbies vineyard a few months ago.

Due to climate change, they are now growing the Pinot Noir grape. They started 6 years ago and the first harvest was last year with bottles due to be sold later this year, I guess the whole production thing is a bit more involved than squashing a few grapes! Their wines & fizz are very good so will give it a try when it comes out.

There would be no Champagne without the Brits anyway. Original French bottles were so rubbish that they kept exploding and it was only until they used British made bottles that the French could sell their overpriced product effectively.

I knew one of the owner's nephews really well when I was doing my A levels. I remember when he planted his vineyards to much mirth from pretty much every angle. He clearly had the last laugh.
