I hope so. We've been dire all year and you need your captain to lead from the front. He hasn't done that really.

I'm not joking. The batting lineup seems to have been little changed compared to the bowling and all rounders positions... How many times does a collapse start by a loose shot at the wrong time?

How many times does this keep happening? it's usually Moeen or Root when well set but others always chip in to increase the panic. Drop someone, even Root, then hope he and the others learn some adhesion and grit.

Hales, Balance, Vince, Compton, Duckett, Hameed (injured) and Taylor retired due to heart problems and a great player of spin.

Cook, Jennings, Hameed, Root, Moheen, Bairstow, Stokes, Buttler will do me in the next Test in July 2017. Won't bother thinking past that with 61/2 months to go. They can all go and have an undeserved rest.

Hameed and Jennings are still very inexperienced and the others in your list can all fall easily to a rash stroke, I look at that list and can almost see 92-5 on the scoreboard.

Completely agree and personally if he wants to continue, I wouldn't remove him yet.

I still think it might be best for Cook to go of his own accord though. Boycott spoke well about it after the match on TMS as it goes (I'm not normally his biggest fan.) Cook encouraged debate about his position by being very non-committal about his future before this winter, he then followed it up by saying that he thinks Joe Root will be a good captain. We are in Australia next winter so if Cook continues he really has to commit until the next Ashes series is done. If there's any doubt (and I can't see how there won't be doubt after this hiding) it might be best to let Root get his feet under the table this summer before an Australian winter.

The good news for everyone is there is no need to rush a decision right now.

I'm almost certain he'd want to continue playing. He could easily end up the second highest Test Match run scorer of all time. It's not totally inconceivable he could catch Tendulkar at the top.

Many of you seem confused with the Cook Captaincy issue. Bayliss wants Cook as Captain and said so yesterday. Cook may want to continue he may not. It is up to him to decide.

Interesting that he won 4 out of 5 tosses in this Series. We could have been thrashed if we had not batted first most the time!

We were on top in the 1st and got close-ish to forcing a result.... after that....

However, to lose 4-0 with a side containing Cook, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Anderson (albeit on the way back from injury) and Broad is pretty piss poor. You would have expected one or two of the batsmen to score a big one and either set us up for at least a draw or else bat out a draw. The fact that kids like Hameed and Jennings scored runs says it all.

The fact that they sent for Dawson (who's not even a regular bowler for Hampshire) when they needed a replacement spinner says it all. If you have to put an extra batter in to bolster the tail, then there's something very, very wrong with your batting line-up.

And another pertinent question. How convinced are we about Root's suitability for the job? Or is it more the dearth of other candidates?
