5th ODI England v Aussies

19 for me please.

On an unrelated note, can someone please explain the logic behind being able to get 5 (or more) as a result of overthrows? As I understand it, you get one for the completed run, and 4 for the boundary. Why? If you hit the ball towards the boundary and complete a run before it reaches the rope you don't get 5, so why do you when it's overthrows?

I always thought this is something that should be introduced into Twenty20 cricket to make it more exciting.

Hit a slow shot to the boundary for 4, and run 2 or 3 whilst the ball gets there - that would be brillio!!

As would being able to get 2 batsmen out in one delivery like in baseball.
EG, the fielder catches the ball from the batsmens shot, and then throws the ball at the stumps to run out the other batsmen whilst they run. 2 out in one ball = coolio iglesias!!

Probably wouldnt work, but would make it more exciting

as for the rule on 4 over throws etc, I dont know :)

Yes if nothing else makes a mokery of any Ravi sweepstake, I imagine its because he played a shot.

17 off 17 balls but don't fear he just got turned around.

Can I just check - I assume that we haven't taken the powerplay yet? Is Strauss really that ignorant to the use of the powerplay?

It seems to me that the powerplay has two main uses;
1) it allows two 'in' batsmen to score more freely;
2) it forces the opposition to use their best bowlers; this means they will not be able to bowl as much at the death

In order to maximise both of these effects, it needs to be used much MUCH earlier than Strauss is ever using it. The last 8/10 overs the batsmen should already be looking to smack the ball about a bit, it shouldn't require the use of the powerplay. The powerplay should be an EXTRA chance to smack the ball about.

Yes but the problem is if they take it now they could give away their wicket with much more of the game remaining. If we had more wickets in hand, yes it could be an idea but it would very risky to take it before 40 overs. Taking it in th 35th could be a good idea to give them an over to get in the 2nd new ball

As Prior has just reminded us, England tend to give their wickets away anyway. I'd be alright taking it in the 35th, but IMO leaving it until 42 (especially when 7 down) as we've tended to in this series just seems crazy to me.
