What a partnership! 71 runs in 8.5 overs.
Significantly, we've reached 162-4 and South Africa lost their 4th wicket at 161, so we've matched their top order performance and the match is evenly poised.
The ball is 39 overs old so the evening session could hold the key to the match - if either of these guys bat through the session. Arguably, Ben Stokes is the prize wicket for South Africa, he is on fire on this tour and could easily take the game away from them if they don't get him out in the first hour after tea.

Stokes isn't too great at the technicalities of running between the wickets because he's so used to SMASHING everything to the boundary.Crikey... Stokes nearly ran himself out in the over before tea

Yep, it feels odd preferring Root to be the next man out. A session from Stokes could seriously put SA on the rack.

Stokes loves a wicket with a bit of life in it, it's reminiscent of that ton he made at Perth. Awesome stuff.

Cricnfo reports that since his test debut in Dec 13 Ben Stokes is the ONLY test player to have hit 1,000 runs and taken 50 wickets. Therefore, England appear to have the best all-rounder in the world on recent form.
He's now doing the work of two men, and this is compensating for our failures at the top of the batting order.

But oh to be there with the Barmy Army now! The beer kicking in nicely after tea, 100+ partnership from Root and Stokes at 7 an over, both players hitting boundaries for fun and the game afoot.
What a shame... pressure really on the lower order now...

VERY impressive stats for Stokes.
Heck of a bowler, Botham. That's a LOT of wickets.
Flintoff doesn't really stand up in comparison. Always was hugely over-rated. though in his defence he did have a special something, that made him that BIT more useful than his raw stats suggest. A knack of getting that REALLY important wicket, etc.
