As I sit hear in my garden on a fine summers day looking out to sea and can barely hear the road noise from the A259!

15 minute train journey to the Amex! 2 minute walk to the South Downs, 5 minute drive to Seaford beach! Not bad for 'scummy' old Newhaven!!

Granted, the town centre is a dump and should be bulldozed but some very nice houses and areas within a couple of mile radius!

£300k would get you a nice 3/4 bed Det house/bungalow.

Saltdean might be a good option. It's quiet-a mix of families and those whose kids have flown the nest, bordered by the sea to the south, the downs to the north and telscombe tye to the east so lots of choice for dog walking. It's got all the basic amenities and shops you need. Not as expensive as rottingdean or ovingdean and classier than woodingdean and peacehaven... And you can definitely get a decent place for under 400k.

Only a ten or so minute drive form the centre of brighton too.

Good location - but wife didn't like the kitchen.

my parents live in Steyning right on the high street and its a really nice place during the day, although (this might just be living on the high street) you are kept up all night every weekend by drunkards staggering around the place yelling obscenities which is a bit annoying

cracking view of the downs, and the local sussex produce store and truffles bakery are awesome - id quite like to live there one day

no mate quiet sounds great to me. Kids are grown up now so it's just me the wife and our oldest lad..... oh and don't forget the dogs

There are some good suggestions on here - many of them places where we looked when we moved to Brighton. Portslade, Southwick, Hangleton. One place that you should look at is Telscombe - I know nothing about the place but the bit of common land at the back of the estate is massive, was there the other morning and it was full of dog walkers. And you should definitely have a look at Coldean - it's green and it's peaceful.

All of these places are cheap by Brighton standards, you'll get a lot for your money as Londoners don't tend to move to them

Why is it that people slag off where they live? It's beyond me!

All areas have run down parts but to generalise does not paint the full picture!

The OP was after info on where to get value for money!

I wouldn't expect you would say that Margate, Ramsgate, Cliftonville, Deal etc would be your area of choice because of what you have read (these are in Kent by the way!!)? I guess you would generalise these and group them as 'shit holes'!! Again the town centres of these once lovely seaside towns are not the best!

But the OP would understand that a few miles outside of these towns, there are some great areas!!

Get out your A-Z and travel a bit and you might realise that where you reside is not half bad!!

Selling a 3 bed Semi in Southampton for 200k. Lovely views of the docks and Only 90 mins from the Amex by traino.Hope this helps as its slightly nearer Brighton than Kent

Withdean is generally over priced so be careful. It really depends on what you really want and what work you're prepared to put in. For example here in sleepy Hangleton my neighbours brought the semi-detatched 1 bed bungalow next door for £200k. £30k to add an extra layer and it's about to become a two bathroom, 3 bed with a 120 foot garden.

Thats a cheap extension - who was the builder ?

Some nice places in Westdene or Patcham for £400K
