If you only have 6 HGPs, you can only name a 23 man squad; that doesn't stop you having 20 foreign players on the books - but three of them won't be named in the squad. Liverpool had enough overseas players so they could leave the injured VVD off the list. I'm pretty sure we don't have more than 17 overseas players, so we'd have to name, for instance, Dicker to make up the 25 man squad - and still leave Locadia out.

Simply not true.

West Brom didn't name Kamil Grosicki in their squad at the start of last season and only named a 24 man squad, they could have named him as a vast majority of their squad was home grown. Sheffield United also named a 22 man squad leaving goalkeeper Simon Moore out, he could have been named too as he was a HGP so nothing stopping him being named.

How am I wrong? I showed two examples where players were left out of squads despite the fact their clubs had named less than 25 players so there was space for these contracted players to be named but they were not. That means we wouldn't have to name Locadia in the squad if we didn't want to.

There will be a lot of activity over the next 12 days. We need to shift a few of these, whether sales or on loan. Prime candidates remain:

Hopefully a full-/wing-back and striker to arrive. If we shift seven of those eight and achieve those two signings, that'll leave 23 to name, along with 6 u21s(?) in the squad. Maybe Walton to go too, but that probably depends on Scherpen's injury. Of the other 6 u21s, Karbownik, Van Hecke, Roberts and Caicedo all will probably benefit from going out on loan.

The technical 25 man squad registration is not the issue... the issue is that there are 34 players at the club most likely expecting/wanting to play first team football somewhere.

On this, my guess is that McGill's performance for the u23s the other night will embolden GP to let Walton go, knowing we've got a 3rd choice keeper with league experience in good form.

Also I dont think Scherpens injury is that serious. He was called up to the Dutch U21 provisional squad and I dont think he would have been if there wasnt a chance of him getting fit in time, so he should be back in a couple of weeks.

Could see Walton going to Sheffield unless they get Robin Olsen.
