It might not have been flashy, gimmicky and bumptious, but it was partisan and political. There aren't neutral answers to these issues, and RR has bet that investment will revive the long-slumbering economy. We'll see if it does (I suspect it will, but I'm not nostradamus).
By partisan and political I mean marinated, stewed and then garnished with jibes at how "if the right honorable socialist opposite were in power, we would all be on bended knee, massaging the flaccid penis of the IMF with one hand, and the hot semi-on of the general secretary of the TUC with the other, while taking it from behind by a queue of members of EU member states" at every juncture. Just think back to any Johnson speech.

(and of course you aren't Nostradamus. You're Machiavelli. I can read, you know ??? )

It was extremely political and bumptious — unless we’re using different thesauruses. And partisan. Gimmicky? Mmm, no, not really. Fair enough. Though I’d add in snide to balance that one out. Not sure what flashy means here so we can leave that one on account.
There is a big difference between political and egregiously political. Serious point.

Sunak accusing Labour of breaking election promises 😂😂😂😂

Really takes a huge amount of brass neck to come up with that one.

David Cameron “we have absolutely no plans to raise VAT”
They raised it from 17.5% to 20%

David Cameron “I wouldn’t change child benefit, I wouldn’t means test it”
They means tested it.

David Cameron “We have no plans to scrap the educational maintenance allowance”
They scrapped it.

George Osbourne “we will reduce the deficit and get debt under control”
They didn’t.

Boris Johnson “we will build 300k homes a year”
They didn’t.

Boris Johnson “we will end rough sleeping”
They didn’t.

Theresa May “we will ban no-fault evictions”
They didn’t.

Theresa May “we will ban conversion therapy”
They didn’t.

Boris Johnson “we will not raise income tax, VAT or National insurance”
They did, to the highest levels in 70 years.

Boris Johnson “we will build 40 new hospitals”
They didn’t.

Rishi Sunak “we will cut NHS waiting lists”
They didn’t.

David Cameron “we will end child poverty”
They didn’t. In 2021/2022 1 in 3 children in the UK lived in poverty.
All true, but doesn’t make the claim any more or less accurate.

Nope - I'd had a couple of interviews with both of them them and they both said they wanted proceed but when the rumours about ENIC started to become much louder they both said they wanted to pause recruitment until after finding out what the budget would bring. They both have now stated they won't be hiring anyone into the roles.
OK. I'm sorry about that. I hope something else turns up.

Brexit is taboo because the fact that the bigoted and xenophobic views which drove it are so widespread is also a huge taboo. IMHO.

Hard to tackle that when the whole shitfest was driven by a huge percentage of the people who have just voted you in.

Otherwise: competent sensible administration is BACK. Love it. Feels weird. Feels good.

As part of the budget releases today, the political parties may be ignoring the elephant in the room, but the OBR aren't.

Catastrophic cost of Brexit on UK trade revealed in stark OBR warning

Brexit is on course to cut UK trade by 15 per cent, the government’s independent financial watchdog has warned. In documents published alongside Rachel ReevesBudget the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said that “weak growth in imports and exports over the medium term partly reflect the continuing impact of Brexit, which we expect to reduce the overall trade intensity of the UK economy by 15 per cent in the long term.”

But let's get back to the budget, and the desperate attempts to grow the economy by a point or two :shootself

Are you trying to say “they’re all the same” without saying “they’re all the same”?

😆

Really? How kind of you to make up my mind for me. We were talking about this in the pub a couple of weeks ago. Not one person had changed their mind. All voted leave & all would do again. Then again I drink pints of lager in pubs & not skinny latte's in Starbucks. I guess its the circles you mix in. If you live in a bubble with people who all think the same as you (as I freely admit I do) you might think everyone think everyone has the same opinion.
Which aspects of Brexit have convinced you that you’d do it all again?

Steady now.

We all know that many, including myself, immensely regret Brexit and hope (somewhat forlornly) that we will rejoin, one day.

However, I suspect that six months into a new government, when things are a tad wobbly, is not the best time to launch head first into a politically suicidal campaign to reverse Brexit.

There. I said it.

Art of the possible and all that.

We are now a nation conditioned to expect to be promised no new taxes, a fall in overall taxation, an increase in public spending, low inflation and full employment, just a small grasp away on a sunny upland. Over there. We expect to be promised all that while simultaneously not believing the promises. And yet we will attack any party that does not make such promises. That's what we are like now.

We are not ready to be told that all of our challenges are not due to the evil and baleful influence of foringers, and in particular the EU.

So let the dust settle a bit. Let it be seen that Labour are doing OK....(which won't be enough for many)....but that what is holding us back is in fact our post-Brexit arrangements with the EU.....and then people may start to think about (no, they won't. They will blame Labour. At least with current thinking patterns).

So have patience, young man. Patience. ???

what a terrible budget that was! Shouldve increased tobacco smoking vaping charges way beyond the tiny increases announced. Likewise wouldve liked to have seen gambling charges taxed much higher and remove the choice to not be taxed and therefore taxed on the gambled gain so no one escapes being taxed. 22.6 billon into nhs is peanuts! wont go far shoudve been a massive injection here. whilst it may sound good that retail, hospitality and leisure industry will receive 40% relief on business rates from 2025/26 I do wonder why these industries get special treatment?

I was trying to picture this in my mind, but then had second thoughts.😁
Anyway, nice to see you back, Harry. I’ve missed your unique turn of phrase.😉

Have you found a magic money tree? Where was it? Hidden in a tobacco field?
