You've got plenty of plaudits for this post, so I'll be the one to break from the fit of harmony that has broken out on the politics threads on NSC.
This isn't 'boring, sensible, slow and calm', it's the most significant budget since at least 2010. I've just heard Faisal Islam describing it as a 'mammoth' budget. This is a significant reset.
Second biggest tax raising budget ever apparently, just behind Norman Lamont's in 1992/3(?)

With reform getting the votes they did and seeing what the electorate did to lib dems in 2019 it would have been a poor political (albeit right moral) position to take
You're quite right. It would no doubt have been political naivety.

But I don't mind temporarily being on the wrong side of politics to be on the right side of morality. (It matters more and tends to last longer.)

So you were interviewed and didn't get the job? But they would have given you a job if the budget had been different?

Without wishing to cast nursturshams, that's easy for them to say. ???
Nope - I'd had a couple of interviews with both of them them and they both said they wanted proceed but when the rumours about ENIC started to become much louder they both said they wanted to pause recruitment until after finding out what the budget would bring. They both have now stated they won't be hiring anyone into the roles.

Extra tax on private jets, sugary soft drinks, second home owners, wealthy landowning estates, private schools and hedge funds. Necessary and I can't see anyone saying that will hurt people who can't take it, and won't stop investment.
I see Paul Johnson has come out and said the extra SDLT on second home owners is likely to impact renters. Fair point.

I think what @jcdenton08 and others mean it isn't flashy, gimmicky, partisan, bumptious and egregiously political, like the mountain of shit we had under Johnson and his desiccated pygmy successors.
It was extremely political and bumptious — unless we’re using different thesauruses. And partisan. Gimmicky? Mmm, no, not really. Fair enough. Though I’d add in snide to balance that one out. Not sure what flashy means here so we can leave that one on account.

Hopefully this clearly delivered and fairly decent budget will help push this lot of whinging westminster-haters further towards the door in Scotland at next year's elections.......(but maybe he's just talking about football.....)

Up your alley
She seems to have left pensions alone, apart from pension pots now liable for IHT.

Still pretty generous for those with money, £60k tax free and unlimited pot size
Strange that I can't see anything about any change on pension beneficiaries' paying income tax on what they take; if unchanged that would be double taxation.
Public sector DB pensions not affected of course.

It might not have been flashy, gimmicky and bumptious, but it was partisan and political. There aren't neutral answers to these issues, and RR has bet that investment will revive the long-slumbering economy. We'll see if it does (I suspect it will, but I'm not nostradamus).

Good news that they have confirmed the funding for Crown Works Studios as that will be an option for youngest when he finishes uni. Only downside is it is in Sunderland, but you can't have everything I suppose.

Jo Swinson realised that Brexit was never going to work which is why as Lib Dem leader she campaigned for a Second Referendum in December 2019 and saw her political careers end abruptly and her party almost wiped out of existence. I think every party took note, and it is as if they've all met and agreed never to mention it again.

My personal view is that everything Brexit is off the political agenda until the 10th Anniversary of the Referendum in June 2026, at which point the debate will start up again. The Lib Dems and SNP will be the first to call for a review of Brexit, Tory and Labour will gauge the public's reaction AND IF Labour's growth plans are flatlining and the Lib Dems are gaining traction then I could see Labour being receptive to something like EFTA membership / Customs Union.

The next general election will be held in 2029, so 13 years after the Referendum and almost 10 years before we Brexited. Labour need to start planning now as to how they can present a Customs Union to the British people without it sounding like a reversal of Brexit. The problem is Starmer and Rayner have ruled stuff out happening in this parliament, which was incredibly naive as they didn't need to do that to win the 2024 election. That will come back to bite them on the arse in 2029.

The Lib Dems ... a swathe of their seats were Brexit strongholds e.g. west country rural. Imho they were mindful of that too at the GE.

I still think an overtly pro EU entry party, one of the main three, would thrive.

At the next election, yes. By then even the most steadfast Brexiteers will have come to the realisation that we're better IN

Sunak accusing Labour of breaking election promises 😂😂😂😂

Really takes a huge amount of brass neck to come up with that one.

David Cameron “we have absolutely no plans to raise VAT”
They raised it from 17.5% to 20%

David Cameron “I wouldn’t change child benefit, I wouldn’t means test it”
They means tested it.

David Cameron “We have no plans to scrap the educational maintenance allowance”
They scrapped it.

George Osbourne “we will reduce the deficit and get debt under control”
They didn’t.

Boris Johnson “we will build 300k homes a year”
They didn’t.

Boris Johnson “we will end rough sleeping”
They didn’t.

Theresa May “we will ban no-fault evictions”
They didn’t.

Theresa May “we will ban conversion therapy”
They didn’t.

Boris Johnson “we will not raise income tax, VAT or National insurance”
They did, to the highest levels in 70 years.

Boris Johnson “we will build 40 new hospitals”
They didn’t.

Rishi Sunak “we will cut NHS waiting lists”
They didn’t.

David Cameron “we will end child poverty”
They didn’t. In 2021/2022 1 in 3 children in the UK lived in poverty.

Really? How kind of you to make up my mind for me. We were talking about this in the pub a couple of weeks ago. Not one person had changed their mind. All voted leave & all would do again. Then again I drink pints of lager in pubs & not skinny latte's in Starbucks. I guess its the circles you mix in. If you live in a bubble with people who all think the same as you (as I freely admit I do) you might think everyone think everyone has the same opinion.

As a consistent 'EU person', obviously I hope so. The media/sensible commentators often talk about one day in the far off future perhaps a Norway style agreement. Quite possibly no full EU entry in our lifetimes.

I still can't quite believe we left, genuinely.

I drink pints in pubs and I think Brexit was national suicide.

There's truth in that. In past nsc chats, other Remainers mention never having knowingly met a Brexiteer.

Through my work I meet a load of people, I hear varied points of views.
