thats bollocks its all o lets blame the english etc. were just being english and standing are ground. the world is just against the english, must be jealous or something

Whatever the rights and wrongs of who started it (a very mature level of debate). The England fans behaviour seemed pretty boneheaded especially if they rose to any bait dangled by German hoolies goading them to action.

From what I have seen on tv (sometimes not a reliable source I know), the old bill seemed to do a pretty good job. The trouble seemed to be restricted to a pretty small area and they kept the hand to hand stuff to a minimum, and they isolated those they felt were culpable and arrested them when the situation had calmed.

It's a shame that this behaviour has finally reared its ugly head, but considering the number of fans out there, the extreme heat and the quality and quantity of beer being drunk it is no surprise.

Overall the contribution of England fans in this tournament has been good so far, and i'm sure those who are out there enjoying themselves will not want a minority to halt the recovery of their reputation.

Wise words indeed

Sounds like the english were congregated quite strategically according to the news and were giving it large all day. 6 of one half a dozen of the other it sounds like.

Hardly strategic. Paddy was there and according to him the English lot were directed to this one corner that was beside the main 'exit' from the square, away from the screens etc so the Germans could get on with watching their team. It only turned nasty when the Germans were leaving after celebrating and didn't have the patience to wait for those infront to clear and decided to have a rumble instead.

He said there were a few not so nice songs from the usual idiots you get at any game but they were soon drowned out by the majority who were there having a good laugh.

Seems to me that though the English fans should have ignored it, it is not easy. From what I have heard the Germany fans started it and some of our fans just decided to finish it. Even the 250 arrested is not bad when you think that there is nearly 100000 fans out there. (60000 outside the ground and about 40000 in the ground).

I find nazi saluting Englishmen an embarrassment. I think they must be thick as f*** if they think that they are representing England. Scum.

There was apparently a program on Bravo TV a couple of weeks ago where they highlighted German fans/thugs preparing for the WC and they said that the English fans 'ruled' Europe in the past but they were going to prove that that was no longer the case.

When asked about ruining the WC they said they were not worried as they wouldn't get the blame everybody would blame the English.

Just got back from a long weekend out there with Uncle Buck and Senor Mendoza.

We stayed out in Heidelberg, which in addition to having a very attractive old town, had a wide range of nationalities there including English, Aussies, Yanks, Swiss and the hosts. Great atmosphere, great beer, some very attractive German women and no trouble at all.

In Stuttgart on Sunday the only people I could see to take exception to were the usual Merseyside Independent Traders scumbags and however thought up the idea of sending a series of highballs through to Rooney.

Interesting that yesterday's News of the Screws featured a whole page devoted to the England fans being arrested in Stuttgart, and the general hooligans, shock horror, angle.

Yet a couple of pages previously in the same newspaper, a massive 2 inches of one column mentioned that 50 people were arrested at the first day of Royal Ascot.

Go figure...

I saw the video on the BBc website. It looked a little, well, gay...

Lots of football shirt wearing drunkards on both sides, some flag waving, one chair being 'hurled' all of three yards. They showed the people getting arrested too, one of whom was a german lady with a german flag as a dress and her face painted. Hardly something to strike fear into law abiding citizens.

I think this 'preventative' policing by the germans is pretty good. Unfortunately it allows the media to go into a frenzy where they can claim that hundreds of 'hooligans' have been arrested for having a riot.

From what I saw that sounds fairly spot on.
