A quick google suggests that separate away ends became regular in the late 1960s.

Home and away fans mingled in the 1950s. I can remember being in the North Stand where a Southampton supporter borrowed my pen to mark his programme. During that period of time aggro between fans was rare.

No idea if this is true but I read once that football aggro came about in the Sixties because the consumerist boom of the 50s meant that married men tended to stay at home more (watching TV, gardening etc) which meant that the average age of spectators went down and younger men didn’t have the civilising influence of the older ones.

Even if this is the case it’s obviously a generalisation. There’d been instances of crowd trouble decades before the 1950s. Millwall (who else?) had a reputation even in the 1930s.

Can someone explain to me (and I've wondered this for a long time), how, if you passed any one
of those blokes in a dark alley one night, you'd crap yourself because of the way he looked. Has the
human face changed so much since then that nobody looks like they do today? They all just look
weird.

I reckon if I lost about 2 stone by not eating enough, grew a moustache, put a hat on and had my photo taken in black and white, I could probably pass for one of them.

I'd probably have a good 8" on most of them of course, so I'd be even worse to pass in a back alley.

I wonder how long the train journey would've taken back then. Even if you had a car the drive surely would've taken most of the day.

The train journey probably wouldn't have taken much longer than it does now, I'd hazard a guess at no worse than an hour longer, since the quickest route now between Bristol and Brighton is through Salisbury and the train isn't notably fast.

The car journey would have been much worse, and much worse than the train, since the cars were much slower and there were no A-roads or motorways.

They say fashion is cyclical. I suspect it may be a while before that tash trends again.

I vaguely recall watching a documentary or a YouTube video or something about the, largely unsuccessful, effort behind reclaiming the toothbrush moustache.

I'll be damned if I can find it now though.
