I would maybe reluctantly take 7th right now based on the fact it means qualifying for Europe in successive seasons despite the undeniable strain the schedule of our maiden campaign will take on our squad.
It has absolutely nothing to do with recognising “our current place in the order of...
Whilst I was one of the more reluctant to class him as an Albion ‘legend’, I’m not sure he could’ve done any more to warrant a bit of respect on his return, really.
I know the volume and frequency of high profile player departures over recent years has probably left some feeling a bit “meh”...
In trying to work out the point at which Poyet stopped inviting Oatway to every managerial gig post-Albion, I discovered that he now employs his son, Diego, as an assistant manager (age 28). Did anyone know this?
It is saved somewhat by Rory’s knowledge and expertise, which to my mind invalidates the idea that you have to have played the game to a decent level to be able to offer valuable insight on football matters.
I think the main issue is they put far too much weight in how much a player cost when they were most recently purchased, rather than what it would take for another club to lure them from their existing club. We don’t spend big fees (for the most part), hence why our squad is grossly undervalued...
That’s pretty much how I see it. Some of the performances with Colwill slotting in at LCB last season (eg. 3-0 vs Liverpool) showed the balance a naturally left sided CB could bring in De Zerbi’s system. It was no surprise we spent the summer chasing a similar option.
It’s to Van Hecke’s...
Saw Leverkusen away at Frankfurt on a trip out there early last season, they lost that day to a rampant Frankfurt but Frimpong ripped their left side to shreds in the first half. Think 2020 Tariq, but somehow even better.
I seem to recall him scoring a LOT of one-on-ones despite being 35ish when he joined us. His movement was top class, but equally looking back, League One defenders were often really quite slow/bad.
Jamie Cureton was another who seemed to run defences ragged at that level well into his late 30s.
Ansu isn’t on a 4/5 year contract though - feels like more of a one-off calculated gamble as we know it’s just for a season. The increase in the commercial income/sponsorships would have to be really quite dramatic for us to start paying those sorts of wages to permanent assets, and for it to be...
We won’t ever be able to compete financially with the bigger clubs so the aim for us must be to convince our best talent that sticking around for 2-3 seasons minimum while *maybe* winning something like an FA Cup or Europa League, along with aiding their development in a less-pressured/toxic...
