I went down to watch the unveiling of the statue.
It was a good turnout on a lovely summers days - pity no one could hear the speeches but well done everyone involved in getting this on. Great to have it on the seafront near the marathon finish line
I reckon so. Off the top of my head:
- not pushing on when there's been a crash / puncture etc by one of the other leaders
- letting riders go ahead to see their family if the route goes through their home village / town (these are rare these days)
- sharing a bidon or mussette
- communal p'ss...
Virtually everyone (well, those with some hope of a high GC finish) can learn to climb - its learning to TT which is the hard thing. Climbing is the simple (!) power to weight relationship - get that right and you can climb. The ability to TT is much more 'mysterious'
Sadly, we don't see many...
Great Tour and a great thread to match!
I think Sky have shown what you can do with meticulous planning and the athletes to match - The 2012 Tour suited Wiggins and having the emerging Froome was a great bonus. There are loads of 'ifs' (e.g would he have beaten Contador etc) but you can only...
Its seemed to move earlier and earlier into Aug these last few years
It used to be in May - the first Grand Tour of the year but moved to september in the early 90's as the organisers thought (correctly) they'd get a better quality field as most riders opted for the Giro and / or Tour.
I'm...
Froome only lost 35secs to Wiggins in the long ITT. Even if he'd lost 1min in that one and another, say, 1min today - that sort of time can be re-couped in the mountains very easily.
Races don't explode in Time Trials but they can in the mountains and gaps of 3,4,5mins can open up very easily...
Its a good question
Think of the professional cycling bunch or 'peloton' as a workplace and that sort of provides the answer - the peloton is a self-governing world where what goes around comes around. If Froome decides to ignore team orders, sooner or later (sooner rather than later) there'll...
Crikey!
I thought he was far too far back but - wow!
With Wiggins well placed to win tomorrow and then Cav on Sunday - will it ever get any better than this for the UK at the Tour? Who knows...
44.05 I think - was aiming for 44min so those 5 dropped seconds are annoying!
It was horrible going out to the Power Station - like mid-January and a howling head wind.
Good fun on the return leg though with that tail wind!
I recommend this race - nice and low key but always a decent turn out...
Its stages like this why I think the peloton is cleaner than it was a few years ago.
We expect fireworks and it doesn't happen - everyone is on their limit and cannot attack. The 'big' teams can stretch the race out so everyone is pulled from their comfort zone
Its not like Rasmussen Vs...
Getting to the hard bit of the Tourmalet now.
I've skied down this from the top. Theres a nice cafe too full of Tour memorabilia.
Wouldn't DREAM of riding a bike up it ffs!
No, no its fine
I love Paul Sherwen's co-commentary. Its so bad its good eg he is incapable of saying 'Lance Armstrong' without preceeding it with 'a certain Mr.'
"It's just all part of the sport of professional bike riding"
"Pilot fish"
"heads of state coming to the fore"
etc
