a big thankyou to souhampton fc

Middlesbrough, in my case. Shocking run, playing a Cardiff side who've looked good all season. Seven other results come in, Middlesbrough balls it up for me. Bastards.

Ex players we were very excited about in the recent past - Now looking rather silly.

I liked him as well - could see a pass, and actually make it. Shame about the other stuff - it seems so many players have missed out on a good career because of non-football stuff.

If you watch the Spanish Football on Sky........

He's not, of course, a target for us, but I'm staggered none of the really big boys have waved a ton of cash in Bilbao's faces for Muniain yet. He looks absolutely brilliant.

    Test you stadium knowledge METTLE

115,000-and-something. I too got the 'wrong' St. James's Park. Not sure how you're supposed to know which one they want.

Copa del Rey 2nd Leg, El Classico

There seemed, as usual when these two meet, to be 23 blokes on the field who thought they were reffing the game. Thought Real were excellent, though - Di Maria was absolutely outstanding. Barca look rudderless without the boss, lucky to have the cushion they've built up in the league already and...

[Misc] What Book are you Currently Reading?

Nick Harkaway's The Gone-Away World - his debut I think, though I only discovered him by accident after reading Angelmaker recently. Rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors.

What are the chances of an Albion v Palace playoff final?

To get back to the topic of the thread, the prospect of playing that lot in a Play-off Final absolutely appalls me. For whichever side loses it'd be the worst feeling about the result of a football match they'd ever had, I imagine. I would, frankly, rather miss out ourselves than have to go...

Points deduction for not being on SKY !

Surely the League, if they're even vaguely competent(!) would have had an 'exceptional circumstances' or 'circumstances beyond the clubs' or the League's control' clause in the contract, so Sky can't punish them for something that's entirely the decision of the police?

    Grammar and punctuation test.

Which kind of demonstrates my point! I couldn't have told you that – I know how to apply were or was, for example, but not what that grammar form is called. I proofread the sort of written stuff you'd see in everyday use, but would not be able to teach grammar.

    Grammar and punctuation test.

Second and secondly are synonyms, but you're right from a consistency point of view, it would have been better to use 'secondly'. (This is why even proofreaders have other proofreaders check their writing.) If you read what you wrote yourself, your brain does part of the reading for you, fills...

    Grammar and punctuation test.

Notts, you're absolutely right - I did not have to pass some kind of grammar theory test in order to become a proofreader and freely admit that if somebody asked me to identify the genitive case or the imperfect subjunctive, for example, I'd struggle as much as the next man. I had to...

    Ashley Cole

I earn a normal, living wage - less in a year than he earned in a week, even back then, and do not go bitching about my 'misfortune' in a book bought and paid for by the same people who help put him in a position to earn that much in the first place. If I was offered a pay rise at all I'd be...

    Ashley Cole

Well, there's the 'nearly crashed my car' passage in his book when he heard that Arsenal had 'only' offered him an additional £5,000 per week (thereby bringing his wages at the time to £55,000 per week). I realise this wage hardly makes him unique in the top flight, but the insensitivity he...

    away season ticket

How would they do this? How do you sell tickets for a different-sized event every week, months in advance? What happens if, say, 3,000 away season ticket holders (hugely unlikely I know, but this is a hypothetical situation) end up chasing 2,500 tickets at one of the smaller stadiums?

    Grammar and punctuation test.

Or your spelling. Or punctuation. 14/14 in my case – but then I'm a proofreader, so kind of should be hitting that number.

More than one best man at a wedding?

Went to one where the groom's two brothers were jointly best men - what could he do? How are you supposed to choose between your brothers, unless you're only close to one of them, for example? They worked on a joint speech, sharing the responsibility, rather than giving two speeches - it worked...

Our best signing of the last decade...

Interesting thread, and a tough call. For me, it's Bridcutt. He's so absolutely fundamental to the way we play that I don't think we'd be able to play it anything like as successfully over the long term without him. When/if he goes to a big club, he's also going to prove as difficult as possible...

The official "Matthew Upson to Albion" thread [merged]

Naylor's just re-retweeted, or whatever you'd call putting that info back up. Upson's in, for the rest of the season. Edit: Sorry, Gritty. You beat me to it.
