The problem at Man Utd is one of perception and expectation. The nature of the English league has always been one of a team dominating, then fading away, sometimes coming back later, sometimes drifting away for a longer period. With occasional upsets/one off wins in the mix.

I don't think it's an either/or. I would say the badge is most important in a given specific incident, but there is also that underlying ideological difference that exist throughout football when looking at 'bigger picture' issues that some in the thread are reaching for.
