Surely the first team were away to Rotherham that day. That's what your programme says anyway. West Ham weren't in the same division.
My first game was also 2 months earlier v Villa.
Quiet place to park on outskirts of city, pleasant bike ride (usually), no hassle parking at Amex (leave "vehicle" just outside entrance) followed by rapid getaway up the A23 on return to car.
I get up at 6am, drive 160 miles, cycle 10 miles, repeat this in reverse after the match and NEVER leave early. Who cares about the pissing rain after an injury time winner !!!
The football played in the late 70s was "of it's time" Is it possible to compare different eras. If my great heroes, Jimmy Greaves, Peter Ward etc, were subject to present day regimes of training, fitness and tactical awareness, I'm sure they would still be superstars. I was looking at the pitch...
Having been there today, I would agree - and I've been following since 1959. The first half performance was so impressive - but we give too many silly fouls away still. We still need to turn the classy play into more goals though.
His last minute winner against Tranmere at the Goldstone in 1965 is one of the few goals from that era which I can still visualise. Wet and murky south stand end, corner from the right, towering header, hit the top of the table (Div 4) and stayed there.
I was there too, not long after arriving home from backpacking in Yugoslavia (you might remember it) and just having got my A Level results. I haven't seen Albion lose to Wolves since then, despite numerous visits to Molyneux.
