    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

BBC is reporting that the outcome of the Georgia election is to (marginally) remain pro Russia. Apparently many of the pro Russia votes were cast in the belief that a pro Europe vote would inevitably lead to another war with Russia: vote for peace or vote for Europe. I feel sorry for Georgians -...

I like this channel - seems to be reasonably balanced in interviewing people with a range of views, including many who are, not surprisingly, guarded with their comments

I think the rumours about this have been circulating (Private Eye etc) for some time, so I don’t think the Union are quite at the front of the queue - but well done Sharon Graham for getting it investigated after others seemed less keen.

Elections in Moldova this weekend - amongst allegations of Russian interference including buying votes (do they have any money left to buy votes?)

Yes,Moldova is a worry. I can’t believe Russian ships would be allowed in to Moldova’s port given Moldova is pro west and any ship would have to pass through Ukrainian waters, but who knows. Transnistria provides another opportunity for Putin to stir up trouble beyond Russian borders...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

The Polish Foreign Secretary (Sikorsky) recent punchy address to the UN is worth watching (apologies I can’t provide a link). Amongst the many questions he posed to the Russian ambassador he asked for an explanation as to how their behaviour differs to Nazi Germany in WW2. Good man Sikorsky

Another unwelcome distraction for Putin who may have to divert resources that would otherwise be deployed against Ukraine. Repressed minority groups might well sense that now is a good time to flex their muscles while Putin’s resources are stretched.

Haywards Heath’s 9-1 victory over Saltdean today shows the gulf in class between top and bottom. Hassocks won too so it remains tight at the top

It’s possible too that in addition to the hardware there may have been human casualties including the military expertise who support the drone maintenance, training and transport etc. Times Radio report today that North Korean casualties have been found in Ukraine - most likely engineers and...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I think I got that wrong about Girkin being close to Putin, but I’m no less happy about his demise. I think he was a bit of a renegade and led pro Russian militia groups in the Donbas.

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I’d missed that about Girkin. From what I’ve read he was close to Putin and part of his inner circle. obviously that’s no guarantee of safety as Putin (like other dictators ) needs to be surrounded by “yes men”

    [Politics] The Labour Government

Hopefully not true as it would upset the retirement plans of many (not necessarily wealthy) people - plans based on getting a tax free lump sum, as promoted by the pension providers. If as rumoured they also remove or reduce tax relief on contributions it won’t leave much of an incentive to save...

[Football] The Non-League Football Thread- 2024/25 Edition

I went to Haywards Heath again today. They are a very good side at this level and play a neat possession based game. They’ve conceded only 4 league goals but seem to lack a cutting edge which makes every game seem like hard work. This match against Shoreham was no exception. Haywards Heath...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

The incident at Novosibirsk is interesting - it’s miles to the east, nearer to Mongolia than Moscow. Either Ukraine has a long reach or Putin has other internal enemies to keep him busy (hopefully both).

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

According to Steve Rosenberg, Russian newspapers have reported on the Kremlin’s draft budget for next year which indicates defence expenditure rising from 28% to 32% (of total expenditure). That seems an unbelievable number…..and given the source it possibly is!
