I had a blind spot on jazz until I was about 40, and don't like an awful lot of it. The London jazz scene is what's brought me to it, although I had an earlier introduction by seeing Peter Brotzmann at All Tomorrow's Parties, curated by Thurston Moore in c2006 -- who blew everyone else away...
Did you ever get the chance to see Sons of Kemet? I suspect there are overlaps with Ezra Collective, who I'm yet to see (was too slow to get a ticket for this gig: they went very quickly).
In my view, Igor has a slow turning circle. He's alright when he gets going but as others have pointed out, he's not that quick to turn and get going. I'd venture that Baleba can shift direction swiftly and covers the first five or ten metres extremely quickly.
I'm also somewhat sceptical of...
I'll take it that you don't like trade unions. You'll also find that in recent years at least the most unionised sectors have had the worse pay deals -- resulting in real-terms pay cuts -- ever since austerity. These unions haven't been remotely militant, despite what they've been subjected to...
Go on then, make your prediction. Will it be that there will be negligible growth, high inflation, rising interest rates, real-terms pay cuts, mounting levels of debt, increased poverty, multiplying food banks and rampant inequality?
She did an awful lot more than making manufacturing a dirty word but if you're point is that she completely re-balanced the economy around finance and, as a consequence, around London and the south-east and that was an UTTER DISASTER for the economy, the country and we'll still continue to feel...
She was right for the wrong reasons on shutting down coal -- it's made the most meaningful contribution to the decline in UK carbon emissions. Given her scientific background, she was also early to recognising the impact of climate change -- I'm less keen on the solutions she offered to it though.
On the whole, I'd say no. It's a strategic asset. Outside of a transformation, the economy is going to need steel. It's very heavy, so moving it further distances is far from ideal on all sorts of levels, including the fuel/energy required to import it.
Need either a public/private arrangement...
It'll only remain as such if politicians continue to fail to confront this issue properly. As has been said in subsequent responses, most European countries have falling birth rates and an ageing population. This means that the ratio of the working to non-working population is shifting. You can...
Went to see Scylla at the Rose Hill Tavern on Friday. They were great. Experimental. Am a big fan of Ruth Goller, and this is a vehicle for Ruth to explore what sounds can be conjured up with a bass and lots of pedals. Backed up by some haunting vocals, and a brilliant drummer.
Thanks for sharing. I've only read the FH one. It's a very solid analysis and pretty comprehensive, although I'd like a little more critical insight into the shortfalls of the approach. I know there is a little on the shortfalls of a high defensive line, but Palmer's post-match comments seemed...
For those that are busy on the Labour threads, consider this:
In his serialisation for the Mail, our former PM and darling of too many has revealed that he'd wanted to send in a unit of special forces to requisition some Covid material from the Netherlands.
If you still think he/they are a...
