It was, believe it or not, Forest last season with a mere 32 points.

(6 points clear of Luton in 18th)
Luton only getting 7 points from their last 17 was criminal last season. 14 from 17 would've kept them up and that is still comfortably below the usually needed ppg to stay up.

A strong chance we could be mathematically safe before we mathematically can’t win the league, which surely would have to be a first for us?

Has to be. We're on the same points after 28 games as we were in 22-23, but Southampton, Leicester and Leeds were nowhere near as crap that season as Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich are this year. This is likely to be a record low points total for 18th-20th, which is a sad indictment of the growing gap between the divisions. The days of needing 40 to be safe are long gone.

I've just dropped acker a quick email to see if he's OK.

@Harry Wilson's tackle may be many things but, having known him for c25 years - and we met in the early days of when the Albion and the internet collided - a bad man he certainly isn't.
You are a kind man. Have you heard back from him?

It seems to me that the Premier League is almost a closed shop now. 15-17 clubs have accumulated such a lot of talented players and are so wealthy that there is almost no chance that any promoted club will be able to live with them. It's almost an indictment of Wolves, West Ham and Everton that they are not farther ahead of the bottom three. They always used to say that a club is only one bad transfer window or one bad managerial appointment away from the drop, but - and I don't want to tempt fate here - I think things would have to go very, very badly wrong for us to be in serious danger for quite a few seasons.

As things stand, we're likely to be joined next season by Leeds, Sheffield United and Burnley - clubs who are now almost guaranteed to yo-yo between divisions. Leeds should be capable of making the jump to that group of established clubs but never actually seem to manage it. Might a wealthy Birmingham City eventually do it? It seems only a very distant possibility.

Of course, Leicester probably thought the same after winning the league and then the FA Cup ... Let's just hope TB stays away from helicopters.

I was thinking the very same earlier when they showed the table on MOTD. It's a closed shop of 17 clubs plus 7-8 clubs that take it in turns to be the three well-paid whipping boys (ooh err) for a season.

Wouldn't it be great if Ipswich finished 18th and Man City got a mahoosive points deduction?

My best mate is an Ipswich fan, he’s been resigned to relegation for ages now. Talking about the potential points deduction for Man City he said it’s our only hope now, but do I want another season of this misery?

I've said this for a while. And I wouldn't be surprised if the three who go down and the three that go up every become roughly the same every season. The gulf shows no sign of narrowing - and no-one in charge of football really seems that bothered about it.

It’s a good point but Luton , Ipswich have bucked the trend of the yo yo clubs a bit and Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham and Forest are going rather well after their recent promotions. And Newcastle and Rr, us seem to hang on year after year. And look what’s happened to Huddersfield, Stoke, West Brom and Swansea.
