Really like him, think he’s going to grow into a crucial player for us. Hope it’s not a bad injury.

It’s not. Post match he said it was just a precaution, he felt something slight in a muscle which had been injured.

No surprise for a Dutchman …. in fluent English.

He’s one of several.

Players from different Leagues need time to adapt to the intensity and pace of the EPL let alone when working with a young manager that is also finding his way. Wieffer was also coming back from a long term injury.

I think Wieffer was one of our best summer signings based in his performance at Feyenoord - he’s really quick on the ball, has great special awareness and technically very versatile. His goal today was a perfectly timed and superbly weighted volley and showed that he also creates his own space and reads the game really well. It’s unfortunate that some costly errors soured his start to the season.

It is taking a while for our system to take shape but once it does, players like Mats will surprise the doubters I think.

In his aftermatch interview he said it was nothing just felt something so expect at least a 2 month lay off
Quite rare to be back within 2 months of amputation

Baleba and Wieffer are my preferred pairing in midfield. Both combative and comfortable on the ball, with a great range of passing. Wieffer is adjusting to the Premier League pace and the two together form more of a shield in front of our defence. Yes, he made a poor start, but I think he is slowly winning people over - apart from those determined to hate somebody. Hopefully the injury is just a precautionary thing.

Can I just say, I told you so. Wieffer is going to come good, there’s a good technical player and he’s a fighter. He was woefully unprepared for the pace of the PL, but you can see him grow week to week. For example, receiving the ball in midfield his awareness is so much better. He scanned the pitch, and had his next pass planned before he received the ball.

Early days it was all a bit headless chickens, but you can see his adapting to the league almost in real time.

Going to be a brilliant option in the coming seasons if he keeps improving at this rate.
