No, but my daughter has qualified for the UK Inter-Counties cross-country championships, being held just outside Nottingham on 8th March.Anyone racing the National XC on Saturday?
Can't believe they are awarding a prize for 1st up the hill, going to be even more carnage than normal![]()
How did you find HP compared to PP? Preference? Finally did Brighton and Hove parkrun this morning. My parents live the other side of Preston Park so I’ve always gone there when I've been down except for one occasion last summer when I was in good form so wanted to try Hove Prom (on that occasion ended up 3s away from an all time parkrun PB). Never appreciated how close Hove Park was to Preston Park, it was a nice 3km warmup.
My local event has pacers every week who wear bibs, so when I saw the pacers holding up their poles without a bib I wondered how it would work, I wasn’t expecting them to hold up the poles all the way around!
One of the pacers (25 or 27) started right up the front. Also it looks like a load of people walked back towards the start at the last minute (maybe from the first timers brief?). As a result the self seeding seemed a bit off and it was a bit chaotic at the start. Think I got a bit carried away weaving through people and found I was on sub-20 pace through the first two km. I hadn’t been planning to empty the tank so backed off a little. Despite that I think only one person overtook me from that point.
I really enjoyed the course, think it was the scenery & nice surface. The 3 loops past the coffee vans and cafe gave me plenty of time to ponder which one would get my custom.
Nice work, Gaffer!I turned up at Hove Park yesterday @Bad Ash Let us know next time a few of us are usually there. You're 20:19 was good for taking it easy!
I decided to race my 66 year old club Chairman after 6 weeks of Bevendean, XC and HIIT it was great to run on tarmac. At 5 mile XC races this winter I have been 4 minutes behind the Boss and needed to perform to get in the club 60+ A team for the Sussex 2 mile Road Relays in April.
We had a good tussle taking 3 turns in leading each. On the last hill I let him take the lead and followed two thirds up before overtaking then pushing the hill. He followed but I managed a 9 second gap at the finish. Very enjoyable to race rather than chase a time.
22:33 was my best for 2 years and a first 65-69. I'm enjoying my strength training.

Nice tribute before tonight’s match at the Amex on the big screen. RIP JohnI'm not doing one of those poxy 'RIP' threads, but I learned this morning that John Doherty, long-time RD at Hove Park parkrun has passed away following a stroke. From one of the FB pages:
"We wanted to let you know the dreadfully sad news that our much loved Event Director, John Doherty, died yesterday, following a recent stroke.
John’s contribution to parkrun cannot be emphasised enough. He has been Event Director since Hove Park’s inaugural parkrun on 3rd November 2007. Since then, he has welcomed and encouraged many thousands of participants, of all abilities and we are going to miss his wonderful positivity and great sense of humour.
John’s insistence that ”we don’t cancel parkrun” means that we will be back again at 9am on Saturday 15th February, for event number 834. Do join us x
Brighton & Hove parkrun team"
To me, he was an absolute legend and one of the main reasons I still love parkrun today. I know a lot of us have run at HP at some point (some more than others!), but if you have, you would've almost certainly seen John around, just making sure everything was going to plan. He used to volunteer/steward at the Amex too and was a big Brighton fan.
Sad times. RIP mate – you'll be missed x
Bugger. The one time I get there late (arrived just as the pen went in!).Nice tribute before tonight’s match at the Amex on the big screen. RIP John
