He had plenty of time to build for Ukraine, he didn't do it on a whim. I just think the idea of the Russian army rampaging through Europe, when they couldn't even get anywhere near Kiev in 3 years of throwing everything they had at it, to the point where they had to use North Korean soldiers, feels fanciful. Especially as if they did have a crack at Poland they would presumably be fighting the French, German and UK armies there as well. If they couldn't beat the Ukrainian army, how the hell could they expect to win that? That's a good point, which I hadn't really considered. I suppose though if the world stands back over Ukraine, he might take a couple of years to rebuild and then make another move.
The comparisons to 1939 don't make sense to me- the Nazis took France in 6 weeks, Poland in 7 weeks, the Netherlands in 5 days, Denmark in 6 hours etc. Putin has got absolutely nowhere near conquering Ukraine in 3 years. Regardless of how poor the NATO forces are without the US, they must be one hell of a step up from the Ukrainian one, and with thousands more miles for the Russians to cover.
