For most of the last 70 years, Americans have been paranoid about the threat to freedom and democracy supposedly posed by 'Communists' (anyone half-a-millimetre to the Left of Margaret Thatcher), yet they don't mind a bit when the attacks on freedom and democracy, and the censorship of books and closing-down' of adult' websites, are actually pursued by Right-wing Republicans and Christian Fundamentalists.

I don't think that there actually needs to be one. He can just claim that something unspecified is imminent or ongoing. There are enough channels that will back him up and he has already started doing it with comments about judges.
Hasn't he already sort of done it with the funding (or maybe the tariffs). He's bypassed the need to go to congress on the basis that it's an 'emergency'.

he has powers around tariffs, one of the reasons to use them is because it legally bypasses Congress. he needs to raise a lot of money to provide promised tax cuts and reduced spending. tariffs and finding lots of things to cut are priority one domestically. plus it helps with switching manufactuing no shore, priority two. of course it's bat shit crazy to apply so high and on Canada and Mexico, it's not a terrible idea selectively on Chinese and other imports.
I’m inclined to agree with one caveat. He could do exactly as you say but he’s likely to meet stiffer opposition in the courts and across civil society. One big, dramatic attack diminishes the opposition, galvanises a significant chunk of the population and makes the final accession that big easier for him.
I hate finding myself thinking this way.

I agree with everything you say, but would push back slightly on the “decades” when it comes to the Democrats. Obama was a genuinely strong and charismatic leader, and I think Biden could have been great had he got a chance much earlier (say 2008)
You're right absolutely right though. How was there no strong successor in place in more recent years? - Everyone knew Trump would be back.
