If you speak out against the President - you lose your job. Look at the FBI and others who investigated the Jan 6 stuff. It's that simple now. And just what a dictator does.

And they have the temerity to lecture Europe on free speech.
Which may be true for people on “Government jobs”, but not of Pelosi, Obama, Biden etc.

Yes - fair point.

They may be speaking out for all we know - but in the maelstrom of reporting and the speed of what Trump keeps putting out, it may not be getting airtime? Don't know.

For most of the last 70 years, Americans have been paranoid about the threat to freedom and democracy supposedly posed by 'Communists' (anyone half-a-millimetre to the Left of Margaret Thatcher), yet they don't mind a bit when the attacks on freedom and democracy, and the censorship of books and closing-down' of adult' websites, are actually pursued by Right-wing Republicans and Christian Fundamentalists.

What a depraved society.

I know what I’m about to say marks me out firmly in the Tin Foil Hat Club but… I would not be at all surprised if there’s some sort of major “incident” in the States in the next four years that will be deemed to necessitate emergency powers.

I hope to god that I’m wrong.
I don't think that there actually needs to be one. He can just claim that something unspecified is imminent or ongoing. There are enough channels that will back him up and he has already started doing it with comments about judges.

Hasn't he already sort of done it with the funding (or maybe the tariffs). He's bypassed the need to go to congress on the basis that it's an 'emergency'.

he has powers around tariffs, one of the reasons to use them is because it legally bypasses Congress. he needs to raise a lot of money to provide promised tax cuts and reduced spending. tariffs and finding lots of things to cut are priority one domestically. plus it helps with switching manufactuing no shore, priority two. of course it's bat shit crazy to apply so high and on Canada and Mexico, it's not a terrible idea selectively on Chinese and other imports.

I’m inclined to agree with one caveat. He could do exactly as you say but he’s likely to meet stiffer opposition in the courts and across civil society. One big, dramatic attack diminishes the opposition, galvanises a significant chunk of the population and makes the final accession that big easier for him.

I hate finding myself thinking this way.

Trump is the anti christ . He will change the law so he can stand as president again in 2028 he will invade Greenland and will ally with Russia in a war with china and then cause a civil war in his own country . He is the 21st century Hitler or Stalin
Hopefully he’ll be dead before the end of 2028. Ideally he be dead by the end of the month.

Hopefully a black woman does become President one day, but the Democrats do deserve criticism for not beating Trump.

Fair post. Anyone who finds it a funny post would come across to me as a bit of a troll tbh, but then they did.
Maybe I'm just missing the humour.

Sadly, like when the UK had Thatcher and later 'Call Me' Dave, and then Boris the Liar running the show, we had a shit-poor opposition.
In the 80s Labour was awash with Militant whose slogan was "No compromise with the electorate"
Then we had Momentum (Militant in disguise) and their hopeless placeman, the dithering and ludicrous Corbyn.

America has been in a similar boat, with aging crony Democrats running the party for decades, culminating in senile Sleepy Joe,
followed, as Joe's dribbling became to clear to hide, by a last-minute substitute with less charisma than Rachel from accounts.

To win, Trump needed tens of millions to say "f*** the Democrats. Let's strap in and enjoy a mad ride for 4 years".
Until these Americans feel materially more poor they will shrug off Trump's nonsense, especially his foreign policy adventures.
I agree with everything you say, but would push back slightly on the “decades” when it comes to the Democrats. Obama was a genuinely strong and charismatic leader, and I think Biden could have been great had he got a chance much earlier (say 2008)

You're right absolutely right though. How was there no strong successor in place in more recent years? - Everyone knew Trump would be back.

@spence

New Year stats buddy:

26 posts on all threads of NSC (16 this thread)
111 laughing emojis

I think it's down on last week. You did manage one post though 'The fooking Guardian. Give me a break'. Seven words, correct spelling, sanitised swear word. Impressive.

Bit of a half time distraction from the adverts. So cheers.

I have just received a 'Well Played' from @spence

What am I meant to take away from that?!

As devastating as this will be for you, I assumed the well played was for Trump rather than you.
