He indeed did make some valid points, mainly that Europe is unwise to lean on America for its security. Especially as the American government is intent on its own age of Empire now, and that this involves a pure doctrine of self interest, whether lawful or not.But apart from the hypocrisy, it was a good speech!
Complaining about this:
When he and Trump are firing anyone who has spoken about the Jan 6 insurrections or made criticisms of Trump.
This - when their whole thing is based on Musk and social media.
This, when he & Trump are riding roughshod over what others think. Including political leaders like the PM of Greenland.
This, when it's exactly what Trump has said he wants to do..
This - when Trump is openly saying he wants to shut down media outlets that don't toe his line - even on nonsense like 'Gulf of America'
I could go on - but it's getting late.

But I always feel that it's important to play the ball here. His speech was riddled with hypocrisy and contradiction as pointed out above. Incredible really. But the point about Europe needing to get its act together and the threats it faces (ironically some from his own country) are not invalidated.

Wow, talk about misreading the room with that speech. Have Trump and Vance completely forgotten that the UK was right there with them in Iraq and Afghanistan, sending the second-largest force both times? We put thousands of troops on the ground, spent billions, and lost hundreds of lives - all in the name of this so-called "special relationship."
Trump has been banging on about Europe not paying enough into NATO for years now, so this wasn’t exactly a surprise. Never mind that the UK is one of the few countries actually hitting the 2% GDP target. I wonder if this latest push is connected to his talk of sitting down with China and Russia to negotiate a 50% cut in nuclear spending. Sounds nice in theory, but are they really the kind of regimes you want to be getting into bed with?
One thing’s for sure if the US is stepping back, our military is in no shape to fill the gap. The Army is down to around 70,000 troops, with a fair chunk not even fit for deployment. At this rate, let’s just hope the French don’t fancy invading Sussex and Kent anytime soon.

I know it was a fee pages ago but that whole centrist, leaning left/right conversation highlighted the limitations of the whole left right thing.
a couple of pages of discussion about where people sit on the spectrum and how it affects their bias with no mention of what they think about anything.
Although it didn't help that a couple of posted seemed confused about the spectrum part and seemed to think it was more binary or with the fixed points.

The devil is in the detail, we may be just off the naughty step re defence budget commitments however we are miles away from having an effective military capability.

When getting on for half the personnel costs (incl. benefits and pensions etc.) is being soaked up by civilian personnel, the question of whether the defence budget is funding an effective armed services is very real. I am in 5th no it’s not camp by the way.

I don't see this as a attack on the good people of our countries, it’s a wake up call to the “so called leaders”.
No surprising, and understandable in some respect the response from some is to overreact and hit out with derogatory remarks against the Americans. They (America) ain’t perfect, but lets see where they are in 4 years time compared to us.

Agree ‘democracy’ works better here but again, two entirely different electoral systems, constitutions and representative Government. Also Trump is not a ‘democratic’ leader, he is and autocrat and plutocrat.

I don’t know how we got to a security crisis in the West where governments are required to spend 5% of their GDP on defence - it’s the arms race and cold war revisited and my feeling is that is partly Trump’s history of appeasing both Putin and President Xi and partly where Trumpism is heading. Trump undermining NATO, undermining the UN and undermining the ICC - in fact undermining global institutions in a wide number of areas and pursuing such an isolationist policy agenda that it is adding to the security vulnerabilities in the West.
The US has for decades played the policeman of the world, pursued what Russia, China and the ME regard as ‘imperialistic’ agendas, helped expand the sphere of NATO alliances and dominated global world fora. Trump’s executive orders, one after the other are reversing key international relationships and policies that have been in place since the mid 1940s.
His isolationism and deconstructionism is both reckless and destructive imo.
