American Football is just rugby for wooses anyway. I like to try new sports, but I just don't get it. I think I read that each team uses 53 players ! I wonder if Trump understands it.
Believe me, it is not just "rugby for wooses". Go give it a try, and see if you change your mind after a few hits.
...it’s shit to watch, but also you can’t just go and play it with a few mates.
Yes, yes you can. Quite easily in fact.

Don’t be obtuse, as a political principle the US taxpayer through whatever US Governmental mechanism should not be underwriting asylum claims for foreigners in a foreign country and certainly not politically inspired events.

No doubt this is great for the Charities that process the funding and legal profession and other organisations that can access this particular trough.

Apart from the anti trump zealots that can’t process any matters fairly I suspect even Democrats were rolling their eyes at this one. Politically it confirms Trump was right and there is a swamp to drain.

It doesn’t mean he is absolved of anything else, however on this matter he should be applauded. We need the same scrutiny on DFID spend here, I bet we’re funding some similar BS overseas too.
So - Do you not believe diversity, equity and inclusion are good things? You didn't answer.

why ???

Many people play cricket with a few mates in a field without all of the protective equipment, all you need is a bat, four stumps and a non-hard ball, you can do the same with American football, all you need is a ball and a few jumpers for end zones

When they started showing gridiron on channel 4 back in the 80s they were saying then that it will be more popular than rugby in 5 to 10 years….its not ,and for one big reason it’s shit to watch, but also you can’t just go and play it with a few mates.
we used to play it at lunchtime at school.

Pads or not, they take some crazy big hits. I’m not sure I’d describe it as “just rugby for wooses” look at top international players like Rees-Zammit who tried to crossover and failed miserably.

I think it will probably overtake Rugby from a fan base perspective in the 5-10 years and it’s predominantly played in one country.

It will never touch real football though!
It's already bigger in that 123.7 million in America watched the Superbowl. However only 62.5 million viewers outside of the US, compared with a worldwide audience for the most recent RU World Cup Final of 94 million, so it's global impact isn't as significant. They're both way behind the cricket World Cup final, 300 million, the Champions League Final, 400 million and the actual World Cup Final 1.5 billion. (Fifa figure, so possibly shonky).

Despite the millions put into advertising and media hype, I don't think that Grid Iron Football will ever truly break out of its home country and be as significant as the world's other team ball sports. The rest of the world has no culture of participation and interest in the game and no need to develop one because it already has football, a more compelling, far simpler and more beautiful game. The organisation of the US game isn't really set up to prioritise the promotion of emerging leagues in other nations. Its all about the top league, selling the top league and keeping the cabal's profits at a maximum. As corrupt as Fifa is, it does prioritise the spread of the game to new parts of the world and new markets. World Rugby has not only the 15 aside World Cup, but the sevens tournament and women's equivalents, which are increasing worldwide participation and viewership. It seems surprising in today's world that there hasn't been a really successful women's version of the NFL/Superbowl. This also seems a very limiting factor to its potential worldwide growth.

Sorry, a bit off topic. Donald Trump Grrr. Carry on.

Yeah, you can, and we did. Me and a few mates met up on Hove lawns one Sunday morning in the early 80's to throw a ball about. We got a few more people involved and moved to Hove park. After a couple of years we evolved into the B-52s.

Didn't some of you end up singing backing on 'Shiny Happy People? ;)

(Sorry. Childish, stupid and unnecessary, but this is NSC so someone had to).

BBC says mostly cheered?

As does the independent?

While Swift was getting a negative reaction from the crowd, the opposite happened when Donald Trump also appeared on the jumbotron, with sections of the crowd breaking into cheers.

Like it or not he's popular there, seems to be getting more popular as well.
Does seem that way, approval rating seems high.

Almost all the major broadcast and print media stateside is now compromised even the New York Times. Hard for ordinary folk to get a measure on what really is going on. Foreign channels best until they get taken off air

Yes you can throw a ball at each other, that’s called catch. But can you form line ups and run full pace at each other without being kitted up with helmets?

I am very biased about anything American, so maybe I shouldn’t get involved 😂

Thanks for that post. I was beginning to think I'd misheard BBC news this morning on radio 5. They definitely stated that Swift was jeered whilst Trump was cheered.

Of course you can. You can either tackle like in rugby, or play flag football which is incredibly popular on both sides of the Atlantic now.
Quite simple really... 🤷‍♂️

One game you can't recapitulate properly with jumpers for goalposts.

Quiddich.

Although this hasn't stopped some rum coves from trying

Sorry, but I was watching it during the Star Spangled Banner, and the response was mixed. Which is hardly surprising when you look at this...

Overall, 47% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handling his job as president, while 51% say they disapprove. And most of these views are strongly held: 37% strongly approve of his performance, while 40% strongly disapprove.

The narrative that he's popular over there is not true. He has divided a nation.

So - Do you not believe diversity, equity and inclusion are good things? You didn't answer.
It depends on the context, I think, for example, diversity is a peculiar value to venerate on the high altar of public consciousness given that if I was trying to achieve a technical task with 10 people who spoke 10 different languages it would be much less efficient than if I did it with 10 who spoke the same language. In that context homogeneity is a strength. Diversity, in other circumstances can be more beneficial that homogeneity, I can accept that without the need for it to be tattooed in my armpit.

It feels to me that when our political and institutional masters decree the “values” they support they soon are turned into unassailable orthodoxies typically protected by legislation……which is in short censorship.

If say the consequence of DEI is censorship, by say re-introducing blasphemy laws or changing historical narratives/facts to not offend certain communities then you can keep it.
