No, he was playing for a Bundesliga Club when we announced his signing the day before the end of their season. Granted Ingolstadt’s relegation had already been confirmed but at the time we signed him they were still in the German top flight.

We don’t have the money to compete with the bigger clubs in this division. Continuing to develop talent and bloody the nose of the big clubs is the way we will stay competitive enough to occasionally go on a European adventure. Mid-table and flirting with Europe is going to be the norm more often than not.

The levels of expectation and amount of OUTRAGE on here are through the roof at the moment.
I got excited about all the summer signings and so far we have Minteh and Rutter whove showed up - the Premier league is an entirely different level - as you can see from someone like Gruda who came from the German League . He hasnt settled but has potential . This fellow again has potential but will he settle ? Or even ever play for us ?Some of us would have the fanbase not get excited about anything Albion related at the moment, but the rest of us will carry on enjoying the moment

Very happy to be mid-table to Euro flirting range. This is a dream that only 5 years ago would have seemed fanciful.
I would dearly love a piece of silverware though... a League or FA Cup win (or go on then – the Europa will do) puts us into a different echelon of clubs with (real) honours.
But I would say the 'stepping stone' comment is pretty disrespectful to the club and fans you've just singed for (in one of most fiercely competitive and watched leagues in world football). Seem to remember Trossard saying this at the beginning too.

We don't, because we can't. We'll never be 'big' enough to compete consistently with the very top clubs simply because of finances. We exploited the PSR window of opportunity last summer, even that kind of situation won't happen again for the foreseeable given the changes to PSR. Mid-table with occasional European football is punching above our (financial) weight.
It is based on reading the odd Argus article back when we were shite, and finding the tone and sometimes the content disagreeable.That's fine – you think what you like HWT. Although I'm interested in where you think he's shit stirred (and if it's an objective or if there's a subjective/Albion-tinted bias).
My issue is with people's professional opinion of him. As I just wrote, you don't get to stay in one industry for that long without doing something right. I don't know the guy at all but, from a work point of view, I think he goes about his business in a good way. A journalist's influence is, some would argue, designed to be neutral. They should never become the subject of the story.
It seems to be a relationship that works for both parties
Mind you I was never a fan of Vinnicombe. I thought he was parsimonious when we were first on the up.
Call me old fashioned but I expect the lead sports writer for the local paper to show a modicum of understanding, even support for the club.
I tended to feel that I was being put in my place (by Vinnicombe in particular).
Perhaps I'm being harsh.

With regard to Andy Naylor, I seem to recall that he used to leak the team line up maybe 30 minutes before the official news.
This is probably going back 7-8 years, before he joined The Athletic. He would also get‘scoops’ on the club, and not necessarily from the club.
Then, 2 or 3 training ground staff were sacked for gross misconduct, and the rumours were that they had been leaking inside information to a journo.
There was the usual noise about them taking the club to court for unfair dismissal, but, I don’t think anything happened.
Coincidentally, Naylor stopped leaking early team news, and became to a certain extent, persona non grata at the club.

Amen. If you want glory, other teams are available. It doesn’t mean we can’t or won’t have a season where everything clicks and we win something, but we’re a million miles from the big 6 as any dullard could confirm.
We’re very much part of “the other 14.”
