I’m not sure it works like that.

VAR have asked the ref to look at the handball. I don’t think that they have made a judgement on the foul because it wasn’t clear and obvious and the ref did not give it. They assumed that the ref saw the potential foul but not the handball.

What was clear and obvious was the Veltman handball.

Then that makes VAR not fit for purpose in this scenario. "there's a foul on the defender, but ignore that, did he touch the ball?"

I sort of agree but I think they were following protocol. They gave the ref a chance to have a look but I’m assuming that they only showed him an image of the handball and not the foul before, I could be very wrong though.

It's probably a pen BUT a) I don't really want VAR getting involved where no one at the ground really thought there was an issue or commentators on first view (assuming also Villa away), b) 95% of the time that's given as a foul c) if we're going to be that penickity then the 8 mins (same as last week somehow) is nowhere near enough time to add on and the ref shouldn't be telling FH that he wasn't going to send a player off for timewasting (why not?) and d) what a terrible way to decide a match against an awful team.

There’s no way it’s a foul. Veltman was diving to the ground looking for a foul like he regularly does

Veltman should have just gone down. If we’d got the free kick who knows, but I think they we re close enough to the line that nothing would have come of it. Sadly he tried to protect the ball situation and got caught out. Horrbile game to watch, I’ve not seen us shithoused like that before(I’m sure others will remember worse). It became comical in the end, and I think the ref should be embarrassed that he lost authority

But these are always given in the Premier League every single week. The Everton player puts his arm across Veltman and pulls. I agree that the tug is not enough to bring him down, but again, this normally results in a foul.

That said, Veltman was very wrong to swipe the ball away thinking that the ref would act as most do in this situation. He got found out.

Brighton midfielder Joel Veltman speaking to PLP: "[The penalty decision] was a long ball forward from them and I was sandwiched between two guys. I got a little push from the right hand side that moved my hand forward and the ball was there. When you fall your automatic reaction is to try to get your hands forward onto the ground before you hit your head, it was more a reaction than a purpose handball.

Love Joel, but he's trying to "defend the indefensible" imho. When you fall you put your arms out to break your fall, you don't tuck one arm in and move your hand towards your opposite hand....

......it's a bit like saying I slipped, fell over and accidentally penetrated her ;-)

The ref had already waved away Veltman trying his usual earlier in the half.

Get the impression they’re onto him now.

Was fun whilst it lasted!

Not sure what "we" are supposed to do about their shithousing.

Their players sitting down every time they lose the ball? What would you suggest?
