Villa had a 3 man midfield two of whom are quick and skillful and the other is a big, fat bastard (McGinn). Not surprising that our 2 were overrun at times (quite often). Baleba got through a lot of work to stem the tide.
Tieleman’s?! Classy player that he is, he’s certainly not quick! One of the slowest CM’s in the PL.

For large parts of the game, we were completely bullied by Villa. I am hoping Gomez will bring a little more physicality to our midfield, I am less worried about the timesclaes of when he starts.
They certainly had 15 mins either side if HT where we looked like being overwhelmed, but other than them pushing hard against Igor, I don't think the gulf was that wide... McGinn was the difference.

Yeah. What does Fab think he is doing? I mean it isn't like we have finally started winning games is it?
Fair point.

But I was a little surprised he wasn't on the bench last night.

Even a player certain to leave got time on the pitch.

I have no inside info on the lads match fitness, Just a sense you're unlikely to gain much as a spectator

I guess that in terms of what is best for the team at this point, Jakub Moder was always likely to do a better job than Gomez.

Moder will surely be gone soon. Gomez will then take his squad position and might turn out to be the better player at some point.

I remember the days when you signed a new player. They were on the bench next match, maybe get a few minutes at the end. Then starting second match onwards. Times have changed
Pffft......I remember the days that if we signed a player before 3.00pm on the Thursday ( anytime in the season before a late cut off date ), they were in the starting eleven at 3.00pm on the Saturday.

FH said he was an option in his press conference. I’d suggest it’s more about getting used to playing the system than match fitness.

Likely.

To be clear, I offer no criticism of the manager. I'm not setting off some sort of clamour for him to play.

It's just a little puzzling to me. Surely the best way to learn to play a system is to play the system. There would have been an opportunity at the end of our last 2 games for a few minutes here or there?

Modern tactics are far more intricate than bygone years. Gone are the days when you’d sign a new player on a Friday, and he’d be thrown in the starting lineup Saturday afternoon!

Why do I get the feeling we're not seeing him this side of Easter?

Well, that's not exactly what I was suggesting. I had also kind of noticed football tactics have changed

To add to others' comments, Moder was the only available DCM available to put on the bench, whereas we had an array of attacking players available. Our bench was really strong last night and it really might get even stronger soon as Hinshelwood and Wieffer are not too far off being available, and then there's Gruda and Gomez in the mix too.
