Giving Southgate a knighthood for nearly winning a Euros is like giving Usain Bolt a gold medal for running 90 metres of an Olympic final

Probably easier to just give him another gong as it was clear that his tactical limitations would never have resulted in getting a winner's medal on merit.

At least he can now spend time fighting off the frenzied clamour of Premier League chairmen and fans desperate for him to manage their clubs.

Or not.

One or two remarks regarding Kevin Sinfield and a Knighthood, maybe he was offered one and turned it down after all would you want to be associated and tainted with this bunch ? Let's face it hopefully dignity and respect from the public is worth far more by the way of thanks for what you have achieved.

My wife's father got offered a knighthood by the government of the time but turned it down as he didn't want one from politicians said he would wait for one from the Queen which he duly received.

Impressive stuff. Can I ask what the Knighthood (from the Queen) was for please? The closest I've ever come to anything like this is having a friend who was a Knight of the Garter.

Have always had view unless you are a Botham/Elton John who raised huge amounts for charity that sports people and entertainers should not get honours.
Politicians let me down again as I thought it would be different under labour

Southgate's tactics won the 2020 Euros for Italy. I lost interest after that, but am aware of the fact that we were given a virtual bye into the latter stages of the last Euros. His mentally arthritic tactical ineptitude ensured that we didn't have a hope in hell of winning the trophy. Rewarding him with a knighthood simply devalues the honour.

Disappointed that Steve Rosenberg didn't get a knighthood, but he probably didn't even apply for the England job. He wasn't a failed Middlesbrough manager, which presumably put him out of the running.

Deserved, the most successful England manager since the whole world started playing football
Rewarded for failure. How can that be deserved and seen as successful, he won nothing, zilch, zip.

The whole honours system is an archaic shambles, just for the PM to reward his favourites and cronies.

Keely Hodgkinson is only awarded an MBE for actually WINNING an Olympic Gold Medal, and yet Southgate receives a knighthood for being a serial LOSER ...............and the whole saga is reduced to a farce.

Lengthy maritime career followed by being head of Trinity House which was independent until dept of Trade and Industry decided to interfere which helped develop his mistrust of politicians and some civil servants. After the first meeting where they subsequently denied everything that had been agreed he plonked a tape recorder on the table which he was told wasn't needed to which he replied in seamens language yes it is.

The Knight of the Garter I knew was army and did something a long time ago that he wasn't allowed to talk about.
