I don't know if she's the best ever, but I like Hannah Reid of London Grammar.

Janis Joplin does it for me.

For a modern twist I’ll add Taylor Swift.

There are a lot of others who are good/great too, impossible to be definitive.

Beverly Knight for her vocal range.
Agreed, her vocal on Twist And Shout during the BBC Please Please Me recording was great

As for Lady GaGa, Tony Bennett said she was one the best modern day jazz singers around.

I saw Sam Brown doing the vocal solo for the great gig in the sky, hands down the best vocal performance I have ever seen.

I saw Sam Brown in Antalya, Turkey singing with the National Jazz Youth Orchestra in 1981, before anyone had heard of her.

She was the standout performer even then.

Not the best ever, I do find ‘Best ever ‘ lists very subjective, but, a mention for Joan Osbourne of One of us, fame.

The album that the single was taken from , Relish, is one of my favourites by a female singer.
