Long post alert:

Interesting reading a lot about Fulham, some of which was happening right by us. I went to the game with my son, a fellow mod and a former mod. However, another person we were expecting couldn't make it, in theory giving us a spare seat in the middle of the row. At no point did it really feel like there was a spare place, just a normally spaced out row. People to the left of me then crowded in.

Jack and his mates I know from aways were then in the row in front. It was obvious there were people in there who shouldn't have been before him and his mates turned up, as I was wondering where he was as the row in front was full. In the end - as it often is at aways - the last to arrive had to go in the aisle or miss the match (or stand on someone potentially causing a crush that way). Bottom line - the seats at Fulham are tiny. One person out of place causes issues and there always will be because of the restricted views at the back, thanks to the pillar.

The result and winding up from a group in their posh new stand who were obviously new to football didn't help tempers and a few people had some minutes of headloss at the end. This was dealt with by our stewards in a firm but friendly way, They were far better than the Fulham stewards who seemed to have largely abandoned ship. This sort of back and forth goes on next to the away end at every game in the country. It will happen in the SWC most games I'll guarantee. Nevertheless it did prompt me to take my own son off and have a conversation along the lines of 'don't give people an excuse to chuck you out and ban you'. And that's how it used to be handled. I was nodding along with posts from @Nobby Cybergoat and @Justice . I was a drunken bellend when I was in my early 20s but we self policed and looked after our own. I can remember a bloke we'd never met before pointing out to us that the police were intently watching our group at one game for example. And people tended to go with like minded fans. Easier to do when there's 400 of you rattling round a terrace. Impossible to do when there's 3000 of you and the seats are allocated not by type of fan but by how often you go to games.

Finally, some of this stuff really doesn't have to ruin your day. And a lot depends on the result. In Amsterdam I was showered in beer no less than three times. I also had some complete bellend move into my place at half time when I went for a wee and then spoil for a fight when I wanted it back, even though it was next to my son who was a minor at the time. Was it annoying? Yes. Did it ruin the best few days I've ever had as an Albion fan? No. Did I grass? No.

Whilst I agree, it does mean no one will have an excuse should they f*** around, get found out and then be told "that'll be your last away game for a few years sunshine."

Crying that it's all unfair won't work then.
It’s a written warning, whether they like it or not, and would be used to issue a banning order.

Those who are going to behave like fuckwits are not going to decide to behave because of an email asking them not to.

The email is ineffective for the morons and insulting to those who can manage to act normally when leaving the confines of Sussex.

Misjudged and off target.
So do nothing? I don't find it remotely insulting. You question the effectiveness of the email? Just maybe this is just the 'shot across the bows' of the idiots who might persist being dick heads. If the club do start getting really tough and dishing out sanctions the idiots can't protest that they weren't warned.

What’s the definition of f***ing around? Strikes me some on here are as kangaroo court minded as the club.

This zero tolerance crap means some poor sod is going to cop it and it won’t necessarily be someone who is a complete moron.

When you’re at a match the host’s ground regulations apply. Technically we’re all normally in breach of the seating regulations (unless safe standing is in place). For me retrospective sanctions won’t work, they either tackle the issues (fairly) at a ground or let them slide.

Chucking beer, fighting, entering the field of play, endangering safety of others etc fair enough…use CCTV but not because you’re not in your own seat, standing in the aisle. Deal with it at the time because the key argument will be ‘someone else is in mine’.

And if we ban our fans for not complying away from home but we then struggle to get Chelsea fans etc to comply with our ground regulations when they visit it will mean we’re treating our fans with double standards.
I remember Barnet away just over 20 years ago, and someone was in my seat. He wouldn't budge. So I got a steward. The steward moved him, but someone was in his seat (the reason he gave me for not shifting). There followed a merry go round involving several people. I should add there were no empty seats at Underhill that day as far as I could see. I was on my own and arrived near to KO. Not sure what else I could have done. Standing in the aisles wasn't an option. The only thing I could think of at the time was 'people should sit in their own f***ing seats'.

As you note, this needs to be dealt with at the time by the stewards. One imagines that even if you could get to a steward these days they would ask what they were supposed to do about it. Consequently if I were a chemically enhanced 30 something I wouldn't even bother looking where my seat was at an away game, and would just pile in anywhere, and give a 'talk to the hand cos the face ain't listening' to anyone objecting.

For someone like me I need to know what the rules are. They need to be the ones that are enforced. It seems that by and large the rules are not enforced in this situation. That strikes me as idiotic. The whole idea of this is one reason why I hardly ever go to away matches these days. So it will be interesting to see what I find at sham at the weekend.

Great points. I have similar conversations with my own son.

I agree.

The thing is they have to do something, so they can point at it later and say “well, we tried”.

What sanctions? Unless the club get stewards to have meaningful conversations with people and actually try to resolve situations in the ground you’ll just see people getting penalised and the problem persisting.

The sanctions as specified in the original statement! "penalties include a significant loss of loyalty points or stadium bans"

Really? So it's all down to stewards on minimum wage to have " meaningful conversations " with pissed up idiots whose meaningful response will be ' feck off '

I'm not specifically referring to Fulham in the stand but in more general terms as per the club message.
Nil I didn’t see anyone throwing beer in the concourse at Fulham or Leicester. I’m probably assuming that someone has been bumped and spilt beer on someone else which happens every single weekend. Accidents happen.
