Thought we’d never made it to the 6th round, or even 5th?
Season 78/79, the promotion season to Division 1. Played away at the then unstoppable Nottingham Forest and lost 3-1. Although it was 1-1 at one point. One of the Seagull Special trains broke down on the way. I was only 9 and didn't go. But doubtless other NScers can fill in the details. But that was the only Quarter Final appearance. They'll be lower league teams who have been there more.

Incredible that in our competitive periods, circa 1977 to 1991, 2011 to 2014, other than that season, we never reach the last 8. Most go beyond luck of the draw over a large sample size. Managers not prioritising it?

Stand corrected although we’ve never got to the quarter finals (6th) like tonight’s fixtures then?

The fifth round or the quarter finals as there are 4 matches in this round. The fifth round of the FA Cup consists of 16 teams and precedes the quarter finals.
Thank you. Been a right muddle over this. Of course I blame the Albion. If we’d got this far more than once in a blue moon we’d all be familiar with!

I think I'm right in writing that Villa only stayed up that season because of a wildly dodgy call on whether the ball had crossed the line against them late on in the season. Their cup run might be viewed a little differently if they'd sank back from whence they'd came like they should have. Alas, we live in the worst leg of the trousers of time. :lolol:
Yes, you are right. The goalless draw between Aston Villa and Sheffield United in the 2019/20 season saw Villa stay up and Bournemouth go down, with only a point separating the two. If only goal-line technology was working that day...

Absolutely p!ssed down. My sister got a fur coat from a charity shop that day and insisted on wearing it. It stunk the car out when it was wet on the way home, so we threw it out the window on the motorway.

Thoroughly pissed me off that we constantly de prioritise this competition.

Every year we go out because we rest too many players.

This year, we play a heavily changed team against a (maybe slightly less) heavily changed team from Liverpool. Guess what happens? They are slightly better than us. Then we play our first team against them at the weekend. Guess what? They are slightly better than us.

We'd have been better off doing it the other way round

Must have been a long journey home. Didn't you have to go through London back then ?

I was there. (We went by coach). Brilliant atmosphere, when we equalised (I think it was Ward) we went, well 'mental' doesn't begin to describe it. Remembering singing "We're proud of you" to the players as they clapped us at the end still makes me a bit emotional even today.

We liked the League Cup in those days. A season or so before when we were in Division Three we had the famous cup run of beating 1st division West Brom (away), 1st division Ipswich (at home) at then drawing to first division Derby after scoring in the first minute. We lost the replay, but those matches are still among my favourite-ever Albion games, along with Newcastle in 1979 and the semi-final in 1983.

It's why I always, always want us to treat the Cups seriously. None of this 'concentrate on the league' bollocks. I want to see us win something before I die, and one of the domestic Cups is probably my best bet. That's why the game against Norwich is easily our most important game of the season to date. Lose and it's all over for another year, and I shall be one year nearer death.
