Just read an interesting little fact that shows the folly of Putins Ukraine adventure.

"The average salary in the Russian Federation increased from 2011 to 2024.

2011 - 20952 rubles
2024 - 56724 rubles

That's a 13 year increase from $698 to $567"

It's also worth noting that $698 in 2011 is the equivalent of $977 now. So wages of $567 is quite the kick in the teeth.

the gist, is that Peskov was at pains to point out that the decision to grant Assad asylum, was made by Putin alone. So he has been isolated.

When the shit hits the fan, all other people can say 'it wasn't my decision', or 'I had no choice in the matter'. This is forward planning, Kremlin style.

Is Assad having asylum something that can be a problem for Russia or Putin at all? Seems insignificant to me, but happy to be wrong. If he's an issue, I assume they'll just remove him.

That's a fair question. It is a problem for Russia, if others in the Kremlin perceive it to be a strategic mistake. Peskov's efforts to distance himself - and perhaps others - from the decision to protect a tyrant (yes, I appreciate the irony, but Russians don't perceive themselves as tyrants) is very interesting. It's suggestive of a faction moving against Putin.

I'm guessing, but Assad's presence in Moscow may scupper Russia's plans to cosy up with HTS, and/or maintain a presence in Tartus etc. Then there is always the risk of attracting Syrian hit squads to Moscow, looking for Assad. I could be completely wrong of course.

I am delighted to see we are attracting some new members to this thread. Maybe they have looked in from time to time, but not felt the inclination to join in.

Well, you are all most welcome. This has been an absolutely brilliant thread, right from its inception, just over three years ago. Regulars on here have built up a certain camaraderie, very different from the football, in that we are all united in our burning desire to witness the downfall of Russia. Some of us have a very personal stake in this.

You will be joining just when the pressure on the Kremlin is cranking up as the countdown to Trump's peace talks ticks on. I believe we are only just at the beginning of the end of Russia. It could still take a long, long time.

Tune in for some mad, mad things coming out of Russia. There will be lies, deceit, betrayal, backstabbing, scapegoating, threats, gangster trash talk, arrogance, defiance, denial, all kinds of incompetence, as well as things I haven't even thought of.

Fancy an amuse-bouche?

This is Russia's prep for the peace talks. Previously, they published nudey pics of Melania Trump.

I think your last para is on the money: Mrs R'o predicts a hit on Assad within the year (organised by Turkey maybe).
And if Assad's presence gets in the way of Russian/HTS 'discussions ' I think Assad might meet with a domestic accident quite soon.

Very well said.
I've been enjoying seeing the different links popping up - I have my favourite news sources but I'm aware I can only scratch the surface. It's great to have broader coverage and also viewpoints.

Putin making his short term goal clear again: "Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said during a Defense Ministry meeting on Dec. 16 that Moscow aims to seize the entirety of Ukraine's Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts in 2025."

WTF is that
Indeed. They are clueless. To an extraordinary extent.

It is apparently what happens when your regime is under serious pressure. To state the obvious (I know you know this) it isn't Solovyev talking. It is a script he has been told to deliver by the part of the Kremlin in charge of the TV messaging.

What I don't know, is if the script has come directly from the supreme commander-in-chief, or some committee in charge of the messaging.

Wherever it comes from, as the pressure intensifies, the threats intensify. Threats have worked thoughout Putin's career since he took office in 1999/2000. He doesn't know anything else. He doesn't know persuasion. Only command. Obey or die.

So when the audience is not obedient, what should he try next? Even more threats. Threats of what has worked for him for 25 years.

I can understand them making threats, but what I can't understand, is whatever he was going on about. Straight over my head. It was gobbledegook.

Is it just me, or do those men he is talking at look singularly unimpressed?
